Dean Tsopanides weight

Hope the switch works well for Covert, particularly considering the questions about Rogers' health. Just never saw those guys really being able to put on the type of weight they would need to be B1G DTs.

Seemed like the staff trying to come up with another King.

that, or another Klug. hope these guys can put on the beef and still keep their motor.

Hopkins and Covert. Hopefully with three scholarships committed to three such similar guys that at least one ends up making an impact.
This kid seemed to have decent speed playing out of the LB/RB position. He might have the skills to be a TE as well. Add 20-30 lbs on that frame and you might have something pretty good.

I talked to Scott not too long ago and he told me that the switch to FB has been really good for him. I didn't ask him about the depth chart, but I wouldn't be surprised if he played a bit this year.

Here are some incoming weights from Iowa DL of the past:

Mattison: 230
Iwebema: 220
King: 230
Kroul: 215
Klug: 220
Daniels: 230

Plus a max bench of 355 is pretty good. Now if he just has daniels work ethic in the weight room wer could have another story just like his. Being found late and under the radar.

It's not really the in-coming weight, but the frame and the athleticism. Bryan and Ken had the athleticism to play on the outside. Karl was broad shouldered. Daniels had a Russell Maryland, or Warren Sapp type build.

King and Kroul are really outliers. I also am not sure they would have developed as much if there were any alternatives. Kanellis and Bain were supposed to come in and take those spots, but injuries and other issues derailed both of them. K & K gave us their best and it was often great! But for the Hawks to get BCS wins, they need NFL quality linemen.

Well its worth noting that King & Kroul both made the NFL as undrafted free agents and are still on rosters and Kanellis came in at 6-4, 239 and Bain at 6-2, 250. We would win a lot of games with another set of K & K so I'm not sure exactly what you are saying here.

Chad

PS...King was 6-3 and Kroul was 6-2 and very wide so I'd suggest frames were simialr to Bain and Kanellis.

I loved the heart and attitude of Kanellis, however, even before the injuries it was obvious that he was a better fit on the OL than on the DL. That is part of the reason why he ended up switching positions.

As for Bain ... he was definitely a pretty good talent ... however, he never demonstrated that he was good enough or consistent enough to beat out Kroul. And that was the case even before he repeatedly got in trouble. Frankly, if Bain had a decent head on his shoulders, he should have requested to redshirt so that he could have a year to start for the Hawks. That still would have been enough for him to have been able to realize his NFL dreams. Instead, he got impatient and his football career ended up being a train-wreck.

Your contribution to Iowa athletics is making the Hawkeye coaches laugh every time they read your insights.

I don't think he has any idea what he is talking about. Clearly the coaches believe he can be a solid contributor the future. Klug is a great example for the coaches to use to help motivate the young man. He's bigger coming in than Klug was. I don't see him playing as early as Kroul or King did, but he could certainly earn a role later in his career. I'm a little confused what CAARHawk is thinking. Seems like he is just having a hard time saying he isn't a big fan of this recruit, which is ridiculous considering his knowledge vs the coach's knowledge.
