Deace's comment during the podcast really stuck out..

"There's a common theme here between the offense and defense...a heightened sense of aggressiveness from the Iowa football program...that's what the raider defense presents...and now you're making a switch to QB because...he allows you to be more aggressive."

Great analysis. Add in the 4th down decisions, whether by design or due to the FG kicking. Passing routes in the past two games has been vertical with a smart amount of the horizontal stuff mixed in. Hope this continues. Maybe Ferentz 3.0 is still in play.

Those comments struck me as well. The funny thing is it takes an outsider to see this. Many, including me haven't give KF the credit for changing some. Many still won't, but after having it pointed out, I think those changes are obvious. This is why I'm beginning to think CJ will get the start be Indiana.

One thing I would say is I think people are overstating CJ's arm strength. He isn't Jeff George or Cam Newton. He just has legit FBS arm strength.

Now there are plenty of successful FBS QBs that didn't have that kind of legitimate arm strength. But the successful guys had either a dominating D or run game.

Dace has a knack for confusing cause and effect. Radar / Raider defense has been used on 3rd and long. The QB change is because of an injury.

Once again he makes unfounded inferences to support his own unfoundednarrative.

He's got above average arm strength. Not quite Elway-like but above average, plus a quick release. Also, his decision making skills appear to be improving. We'll take it.

I agree. I just think there is a contrast effect thing going on here. If something normally costs a buck it is going to look cheap at .90 and expensive at $1.10. That is the kind of difference we are seeing here, with Jake being under-average and CJ above-average.

Signs of aggressiveness within the program:

Pushing tempo
Going for it on fourth down
Zone read look, although then we negate most of it by never having the QB keep it. Other offensive wrinkles.
Greatly increased blitzing
Greatly increased player rotation, both on defense and through the skill positions
Using extra scholarship slots for WRs and RBs, with a new focus on speed and scatbacks, to the detriment of OL, the theoretical crown jewel of the program
Even some of the stadium experience changes are a reflection of the football program opening things up

Those who deny the changes in the program are really obtuse. Hopefully the aggressiveness continues with QB and the offense in general, but that may be too much to hope for.

First half vs. Pitt...a looot more aggressive passing before Jake went down.

Increased blitzing this year...continuing from increased blitzing last year. 4th downs. rotating in a lot more players than normal. all signs of slight, but real change.

Good list.

I believe the ISU game was the trigger point. After that game KirFer specifically mentioned the containment of the quarterback rather than going after the quarterback.
I also feel playing in the phone booth rather than stretching the field cost us greatly in that game.

Perhaps KirFer looked back at that game plan and realized it wasn't the best idea. Will that translate into continued aggressiveness throughout the rest of the season? We'll see. It certainly works against inferior teams and less talented QB's (Purdue and Voytik). I would be somewhat concerned that Sudfield and Brown could carve us up if we don't get to them/make them feel uncomfortable.

From the end of the 1st half at Pitt they have clearly changed their style of football. You would have to be blind not to see the change in aggressiveness. And I have also heard that jake ruddock was cleared to play so that throws the injury reason out the window. I think ferentz just saw the direction they were headed in and didn't like it. Pretty spot on analysis by deace.

Definitely could have used some pressure on Richardson that game. The couple times we blitzed I believe it worked too, but we just wouldn't do it for some reason. We made Richardson look really good

Yep!! KF was getting shredded by local media and especially harsh comments by Chris Spielman during the game on ESPN. No way does that go unnoticed. The ISU game was and still is a complete travesty, no way Iowa should lose that game at home. Somebody got to Kirk or he finally said

What stuck out to me is how well I'm doing picking against the spread. 8-1 this week. 34-18 overall.

We have made slight changes overall, but we still have horrible results on offense. We push the tempo a little more, we have a few new wrinkles (jet sweep, QB Zone Read), and you could make the argument this is the worst offensive performance to start any season. While other teams are averaging well over 30ppg against crappy teams, we're barely over 20 (22.2ppg).

Our scoring offense is in the 100's (101st). So while yes there has been changes to scheme, our overall philosophy has not changed and it's hurting us.

I highly recommend this podcast. Extremely entertaining. Some of the ideologues here won't listen cause they don't like Deace's politics. to those folks I ask you to open your mind a little, put politics aside for a few minutes and listen.

Deace just absolutely unloads on the entire UM football staff and athletics department. And he nails it...........

I gotta say, this is one of your best podcasts ever, Jon. Well done.
