DC job

Can someone please tell me why we would not want Coach Parker? He has been with the program for years. He would have Norms' ear at all times. He has probably lead the defense for a couple years anyway. I don't understand why he has not earned a chance at the position. I think he would do a nice job for us.

He is a fine asst. coach. I think Kirk is doing a great job of hiring outside of the program. Just because you do a nice job as an asst. doesn't mean you would do well as a head coach or a DC.
You can look at many programs (college football/basketball) and see so many asst. coaches change positions and/or become a Head Coach and they fail at it. I'm not saying Parker wouldn't do a good job, but I think if he were ready Kirk would have hired him the minute after Norm stepped down. Either way, Go Hawks! Some fresh ideas for the Hawkeye Football Program are needed. I think Kirk will get a hire that will help the entire program and not just the defensive side of things.
There are too many fans on this board that will complain either way of who the hire is.

Thanks for posting Phil !!!

1) People think there needs to be new blood in the staff.
2) People want to make a splash hire in hopes of helping recruiting.
3) People are worried because of what they saw when Norm was out and Phil was essentially the interim DC.

I think these are the reason why some people think there are better options.

I heard the reason McCall, Coker are leaving is because they have the inside that Phil wasn't getting the job. Some story about character issues... that had to do with missing sex dolls and strange pillows? Then rumbling that Stoops was spotted heading to OK with the doll and pillow tie strapped to the back of his moped. Phil felt betrayed by the University and is heading to PSU to coach the Kickers and lead in the 4th quarter song and dance.

Ignorance......none of us know whether he WILL or WONT be a capable DC and we base our thoughts on our own failed logic and biases. We are not capable of making an informed decision yet that doesn't keep us from thinking we are smarter than the people that are.

So coming back full circle...simple Ignorance.

i dont think that phil parker would be a bad hire if we can have the right players and defensive assistants around him.

correct me if i am wrong but parker and wilson were co-defensive coordinators while norm was out. and i was under the impression that wilson was the one calling the plays. so if that is the case we wouldnt really know how parker would call it.

I think the primary reason that folks are nervous about the proposition of Phil Parker becoming the defensive coordinator is that there is a perception that the defense performed poorly in 2010 when Phil took over for Norm while Norm was sick. The Hawks had a number of future NFL players on that defensive unit and didn't play up to the expected standard. I think what people fail to realize is that while Norm was out, there were only 3, rather than 4, full time defensive assistants at the time. No matter what the industry is, adding 25% more work to the plates of several people is likely to hurt the overall product.

Maybe Phil isn't the best person for the job, but I trust that Coach Ferentz will hire the person he thinks is best for the program. I don't believe that he will ignore the best interests of the program simply to promote a friend.

Wilson was NOT the one calling the plays. They went with a committee system that left Iowa in basically the same D except obvious predetermined situations. Was a recipe for disaster as we all know.

Quick decisions are never made well by committee.

thanks for that. that makes me think that we have no right thinking parker cant do it. because i would say the system we had set up for plays was more of our problem than the 2 d-coordinators.

Only someone who still thought the moped joke was funny after having it repeated more than a million times would post something like that.

We need new blood. Could stand to make upgrades on several positions on staff. I think Kirk should take a youth movement at several coaching positions.

Kirk needs to open the doors here and hire the best person for the position. You can't close your eyes and not take a look at other coaches in the collegiate and professional ranks. Is Phil Parker the best option out there? He might be a decent coach but not why not bring in a fresh set of eyes to run the defense. This staff needs an injection of something. You don't get the opportunity to hire a defensive coordinator every year so Kirk needs to be sure he truly brings in the best person available. I am guessing the position would be attractive to a lot of coaches out there.
