Davis wanted Rucock to get reps

I guess my only question is what level of play does Rudock need to surpass? Is he being compared to the JVB of last year? Or is he being compared to the JVB who's level of play is diminishing more and more each week. Is the coaching staff expecting him to return to the form he showed last year and is that the reason they're staying with him, or is Rudock that far behind the QB that Vandy has become.

it's pretty obvious what's going on here. Kirk watches them both practice and sees JVB is better then Rudock. The thing is Rudock could be really good and still not be better then practice JVB who has no pressure because JVB with no pressure is an really good QB. Problem is JVB with pressure is an extremely poor QB and seems to be getting worse.
The only way Rudock is worse then JVB in a game is if he has D1 talent and coincidentally preforms poorly under pressure too. Although that is possible, there is no reason to assume a QB that leads his high school team to a national championship can't handle pressure.
Kirk might be taking longer to realize this because he gets to watch them both practice and therefore is convinced of something that just isn't the case any more. Once you are convinced of something it takes a lot to make you think otherwise and that could very well be what the hold up is. He is holding on to the hope that JVB can play like he does in practice and if he does he will be the best QB on our team.

Agreed. But I'd rate Vandy with no pressure merely an average Big Ten QB.

What if Rudock isn't playing because the coaches want him to have a full year learning plays without getting his confidence rattled in high pressure situations?

But we haven't really seen him when there was no pressure like in practice. He has a really strong arm and on occasion looks like he can be an accurate passer. He looked great in the 4th of the Pitt game when they sat back in a prevent type D. That was probably a lot like practice to him. I just have a feeling he has all the ability in the world with a red jersey on and that's what kirk sees.

I can't imagine a few series at the end of a blow out would affect someone's confidence a year later. What it can do is take away the first game jitters players feel when they play in college stadiums on tv for the first time.

Good post. The pressure is the key with James. Way too tentative. Scared to make a mistake. Looks like he is afraid to get hit. He makes me nervous for him just watching him.

Maybe Rudock is one of those who shines in the spotlight.

Years ago, a QB named Trent Green went down for the season. Everyone in St Louis thought this season will suck. But they gave Kurt Warner the ball and the rest is history

That really puts a damper on Duff's "coaches always play the best players" theory.

Ya- and wiseman deserved to be a 5th string running back too!

Weisman being a fullback was understandable. What's not understandable is how everyone knew before the season started that our running backs were small and short yardage situations were going to be tough for them. How did Kirk only use him twice in short yardage situations during the 1st 2 games? Those runs were way to successful to not realize he was our short down back. Of course that would call for situational subbing and that's not Kirk's strong suit.

Right now we just have to assume that Ferentz is accurate in his analysis that JR is way behind JVB and is not ready for B10 play.

He would have some back tracking if JVB went down and Rudock played well.

Doesn't look like JVB is ready for Big 10 play either. Did you see the game Saturday?! Not sure if our coaching staff is ready either. HOw you can play on a National Stage like that and emotionally NOT be ready is coaching. We saw this same thing when Ohio State was in town and GAme Day was there a few years back and the Ferentz brigade laid a big fat EGG that night as well.

I agree-time for RuCock.
