Davis goes under the microscope

I would have made the change now during the bye week, shake things up, show you are willing to. We can give a tryout to BF or whomever then and give us an idea if he can be any better then make the appropriate hire in the offseason.

Shaking things up now lowers the odds of getting that 7th win Kirk has his eyes on.

Too much risk. Doesn't practice well. Isn't a sufficient blocker. We only get production out of our walkon WR early on, not scholarship players

There is no way our wide receivers are so bad that McCarron is the only one who has the ability to get open. McMutt would have averaged about 4 catches per game for 15 yards if he was playing right now.

This might not be the best thread for this but I'll put it here anyway. Kirk has absolutely no ability to make situational decisions on the fly. He goes 5 years without attempting a fake kick, then he does one two weeks in a row (one of which made no sense given the distance needed to score) only to go 19 more games never trying it again.

He pretty much never went for it on 4th down. Then all the sudden he goes for it every single time we have decent field position (again, even times it makes no sense given the distance needed) only to fail twice in a row recently and completely abandon it. There were 3 times last week we really needed to go for it, but he probably decided before the game even started that it wasn't working so he wasn't going to do it.

We used to rarely qb sneak with a yard to go. Then suddenly every single time without fail we rush to the ball and qb sneak. We are still having luck with that but when the day comes where we get stuffed twice in a row, we will never see it again.

It's just absurd that we can't see something new here and there. All it is is him finally deciding to try something new, over using it until it doesn't work a couple times, then completely shutting it down. Quick thinking under pressure is a big difference between a head coach and a position coach.

I think Kirk would be surprised how good the results would be if he actually made a decision in every situation instead of trying to develop a universal rule for each situation. Thank goodness we got out of that thing of always sitting on the ball before halftime.

When was the last fake punt we attempted?
Any idea?

We tried a fake field goal in the Orange Bowl. I don't know that Kirk has ever tried a fake punt at iowa. I'm almost 100% sure he hasn't since the '01 season at least. Maybe the first couple years when they weren't even on TV sometimes?

Yeah I can't for the life of me think of a Fake Punt.

So you don't think having CJB pooch kick is a thing of genius?:)

So zero fake punts in 18 years but two fake no punts? Actually that's what I was talking about earlier. He found something new and will probably over use is until one gets blocked. Then he will never use it again. Even if the 15 before the block got downed on the 1 yard line.

There is a lack of innovations on the offensive side of the ball. One of the things Miller and Deace said that caught my ear, was to add plays with both Wadley and Daniels in the back field. There are things that can be done with what Iowa has, instead of what they don't have. Expecting this group of receivers to get a read pass route playbook isn't working when the receivers are cutting off corners on routes etc.

Wow, imagine that I have been calling for two true running backs in the backfield at the same time for years. but them in a T formation and they can both swing out to the flat quickly to get open and make a big play, or still run the ball, or shift to the slot.

heaven forbid we do something like that which could be contrued as illegal or novel

Yes, God forbid we get two of our best playmakers on the field at the same time that would be a travesty.

You mean like rolling Stanzi out in the End Zone to throw and then doing the exact same play the next week and injuring him because the entire place could tell what was coming...including Northwestern?

That was really the issue with KOK, and it's followed with GDGD. We just tip our hands with what we do on offense. KOK offenses were better because the power running game worked very, very well with the PA seam passes that were a part of his offense. Not so much with GD

But even with KOK, opponents could figure us out depending on formation and down/distance.

Seriously I watched that play and the play where Wisconsin was rewarded a first down when he was clearly short and wondered if some sort of fix was in. Usually I don't complain about reviews and try to lay off the officials but that game was weird to me. Not saying it would've changed the outcome, but it really made me scratch my head.

I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but the officiating legitimately seems to be incredibly biased against Iowa this season. Wisconson - ZERO penalties. NDSU - ONE penalty. Northwestern - ONE penalty and it was just a lame false start. One game where the other team plays a perfect game whatever, but three games? Give me a break.
