Data…

Iowa excels at going 8-5 with the occasional 10-4 season.
For the money this program has available, winning more than you lose in the B1G for over a decade straight is out performing almost everyone. I wouldn't trade it for most of the other 13 teams not on the list but you do you. If you looked at NIL dollars per win extrapolated back over the past decade (assuming the same level of NIL before it was a thing), Iowa is definitely at the top of the pile. And we're one wrong coaching hire away from being nebraska or Purdue.

Kinda crazy when you think of the other teams ranked below Iowa on this list. Yeah, talkin' about you, Michigan. Didn't Wisky have a super-long run of winning seasons until last season?
Not sure Iowa's streak of 12 will get to 13 after the '25 season...tough schedule ahead.

Kirk has done a good job and no one can question that. Did he make mistakes? Sure, what coach doesn’t?

Kirk is getting older and if he wants to keep continuity in the program and allow one of his assistants to take over the captains chair then he needs to move aside and let some else take the reins.

Michigan does not scare me.
In my estimation, Ferentz is 8-9 against Michigan. I count the COVID Big 10 championship that Michigan chickened out of as a win.

9-8 against Penn State.

Obviously, the record against OSU is not....not good. But I can live with it.

The only team that is triggering to me (outside of Iowa State as they should have no wins against Iowa) is Wisconsin. Ferentz is 10-13. Mainly because those wins came in chunks and streaks for Wisconsin. 3 and 4 game win streaks since 2010. And it sucks, because generally, I have no reason to dislike Wisconsin. I have no distaste for them like I do Minnesota. Heck, I kind of even 'like' Wisconsin.

7 and 8 against Michigan State is a little infuriating. But, we just don't play them as often with the realignment. I feel like there's 2-3 more wins against them had they been in the Heros Division, or whatever nonsense that was. That Big 10 championship loss to them stings a bit too.

It is a new playing field. But, I think one that Iowa's fortune of being in the Big 10 and having been quite relevant at times will keep them in the mix.

Jesus. Better dead than red my man.

In my estimation, no bigger rival to Iowa football over the last 30 years than Wisconsin. Every Hawkeye fan should hope they fall back to the bottom feeders they were for decades and decades. You should have every reason to dislike them. Nebraska, Iowa State, whatever.

Wisconsin is the bitter rival.

nebraska has taken over the rivalry. More fan hate, we've played them 14 times in a row now, the "evaluate where they are as a program thing," it's just more of a rivalry now than Wisconsin. I get hating Wisconsin, but that game isn't what it was and the nebraska game has taken all the hype and attention the WI one used to have. That's really the definition of a rivalry.

I dunno, man. Kirk seems to do his best work when they are flying under the radar. Expectations are 6-7 wins in ‘25, wouldn’t be shocked at all if they ended up with 8 or 9.

Minnesota
ISU
Wisconsin
Nebraska

Too lazy to actually do the homework on this, but Kirk has crushed it in the rivalry games the last 10 years. If you are going to win 8 or so games a year…beating your rivals has to be a big part of it.

Hell, things went to a not great place for Wisconsin pretty darn quickly. For a while, I envied Wisconsin. In hindsight, I'll take the stability we've had.

100%. I've expressed my...appreciation?....respect? etc. for Wisconsin in this thread.
For some time, they too, experienced stability as evidenced by Alvarez/Bielema (bonus for the handoff when Alvarez moved into the C-suite)...and arguably Chryst as well. But, I don't think anyone looks at Chryst like they looked at Alvarez/Bielema.

I know as Fryowa says, all schools are more or less 'wrong' (not necessarily 'bad') coaching hire away from becoming Nebraska. But, clearly the schools that are consistently in the top 20-35 or so have the most to lose, longterm. I mean a Texas or LSU can make a wrong move and wind up out of sorts. But they'll find the money to change course and rebuild. A lot harder for an Iowa/Wisconsin/etc. to do that. Lots to lose. You start falling out the top 20-35 regularly (with infrequent sniffs at loftier heights) and the wind is out of the sails with not a lot of hope getting it back.

As much as some people are angrified by Kirk, I'm FAR MORE scared of what statistically is likely with what comes after. Terribly unfortunate that his son just wasn't very good at coaching an offense. Because, had he shown some ability, none of us would have fought that. It would have felt like something in between the Alvarez/Bielema handoff and the Fry/Ferentz transfer. Stability.

In this world where one of like 6 teams is likely to win a NC in a given 5 year period and one of 11 teams total in all of NCAAF is likely to win an NC.....with Iowa not being one of them....I'm more than happy to have lots of above average seasons (WELL ABOVE if you look at all 130 programs). With a few seasons where 'more' seems possible, every couple of years. It's better than NOT having to regularly schedule fall lawn work around the game. Or make sure that your kid and his fiance doesn't set their wedding date on game day.
