Danger of losing O'Keefe just increased

Ron Guenther is out as AD over at Illinois. When they bring a new, football oriented AD, I've gotta think they'll look long and hard at O'Keefe as the next head coach.

Who do you guys think KF will promote when Okeefe gets hired away?

I would like to see Soup moved up to the OC, but I suspect with KF's tenure ladder, it will likely be Lester Erb. Either one would be a great choice, though.

A rational AD at Illinois is my biggest fear. Guenther was a big reason for the strength of Iowa football the past 20-ish years (because he took a giant step backwards), but a good Illinois program will make it materially harder for us to walk into the Chicago area and western Illinois and take out the good players. If the AD goes after O'Keefe, I assume he would have two goals in mind, one, taking Illinois football up a notch or two with a competent coach and two, harming Iowa football by depriving Kirk of the continuity in the system and playcalling we have come to expect. Today could very well be the day that Iowa football is relegated back to mediocrity if Illinois plays this right.

Your stirring the pot aside….the likely hood of ANY Big 10 coach leaving one school for another is very, very slim. Even if the position is OC to HC it is rarely done in a conference like the Big 10. Then toss in the KOK/KF friendship it becomes even MORE unlikely.

Anything else….

Even when Illinois was getting most of the players in Illinois they didn't necessarily set the world ablaze. Yes Iowa gets a fair amount of players from Illinois, but so does Notre Dame, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin. The Chicago area has always been open territory.

As long as Iowa can keep the streak of good coaches in tact I am not going to worry. Illinois has to hurdle Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin in its division before it can reliably be competitive year in and out.

Wait isn't this what happened to Beilema? Or was he just a player and never an assistant at iowa?

Fixed it for you:D

NM. He was just a player then Co-DC for Kansas State, then to Wisconsin as DC before HC.

But I'm sure it's happened before.

HC from one B1G to another is pretty unlikely. But if an Assitant gets a shot at HC, I'm pretty sure he'd be interested.

I know the post mostly in gest about Okeefe but I dont think he is pursuing any head coach jobs. He is happy to be away from media and working with KF.

Fitz was offered at Michigan. He will likely be offered at PSU when JoePa steps down. O'Keefe was a finalist for the Indiana job. Alvarez went to Wisconsin (with an intervening stint at ND). Minnesota also hired Fritz Crisler from the University of Chicago, so I wouldn't say the scenario is wholly unheard of.

If you're the new AD at Illinois, your first order of business is likely to shore up their terrible football program (which, coincidentally has more Rose Bowl appearances and wins in Columbus in the past 10 years than Iowa). What better way to improve your team than by bringing in a better coach and jabbing your border state rival in the eye?

"(which, coincidentally has more Rose Bowl appearances and wins in Columbus in the past 10 years than Iowa)."

= another pot stirring comment. shocker.

...a statement which is true, but actually means nothing in terms of how the respective football programs are viewed by the cfb world.....but good for response posts I guess....I'm guity.

What I need to know, OK4P, is if you will work on lining up season ducats at Memorial Stadium to watch your buddy KOK guide the Flying Illini?
Jump on the bandwagon now, while there is still room.

I have a couple of obvious questions that have yet to be asked in this thread...

First, what in the hell are we to call the Illini if KOK takes over? We sure as hell can't keep calling them "The Fightin' Zookers"!

And lastly...if KOK leaves, will we still be able to put up below average points against below average teams, or are we going to bore everyone to death by actually blowing people out?

Bielema was an assistant coach at Iowa, before going to KSU and finally Wisconsin.

How about Bo Shembeickklereesssder from OSU to MICH. That was a fairly significant in-conference move.
