By Brett Vito / Staff Writer North Texas head coach Dan McCarney doesn’t plan on giving his players much of a break – or take one himself – after suffering a stroke over the weekend.
“The coaches let the players know what happened,” McCarney said Tuesday afternoon from Fort Worth, where he is still in the hospital. “I will be back out there chewing their butts again soon. We have a plan in place. We will not let each other down.”
UNT began putting that plan in place just hours after McCarney fell ill on Sunday afternoon.
McCarney had just finished working out at a local gym and was sending a text message to UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal when the left side of his body went numb.
“There was a blood clot that hit the back of my brain,” McCarney said. “My son Shane and my wife were there. We dialed 911 and I got the first helicopter ride of my life.”
McCarney has been in Fort Worth since. He credited the care he received for helping him through what he called a “hell of a scare.”
McCarney has undergone a series of tests in Fort Worth since and said that doctors have found no indication that he is in any danger of having any additional problems.
“I’m 100 percent better,” McCarney said. “I’m getting antsy. I’m not a good patient.”
McCarney said that he is remaining in constant contact with his coaching staff and will lean on his assistant coaches as continues his recovery process.
“I can’t thank people enough for their support,” McCarney said. “The North Texas family is special. I can’t put into words how much I appreciate it.”

Hopefully it was just temporary blockage after a workout. It can happen, especially in older men. I hope he has a full recovery.
