Dan Lanning's Powerful Words about Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz

He also spoke about Phil Parker. Can’t disagree with him. From article:

“I met him in Big Ten meetings, and it's like, you feel like you're in the presence of somebody really special, and he's so humble for what he's accomplished," Lanning said. "Obviously, more Big Ten wins than anybody in the history of the Big Ten speaks for itself. But a coach that does it the right way, believes in what he believes in, and does it to such a high standard. I've got a lot of admiration and respect for him, and the job that he's done at Iowa.”

But yet there are still people who want him sent packing after ISU and Indiana, lol

I don’t necessarily want him packing but how many more years has he got, or want? I have been critical of Kirk at times but seeing what goes on around the country, i don’t want to see a swing and miss in the coaching search. You gotta take that gamble at some point tho.

You were one of those people, as was I...
Nope. I never once said he should be sent packing. I’ve said multiple times I didn’t think that would be good for the program in fact. What I did say was that he didn’t have it anymore and it’s time for him to retire after this year. Those are two very very different things.

Firing a guy like KF and him retiring couldn’t be farther apart from each other in terms of what it would do to the program and its future

Maybe you didn't say "fire", but you started a whole thread about "Starting To Also Think It’s Time". You said it's time for him to hang it up because he's getting old, the loses don't affect him and he just doesn't care.

Not trying to start anything, but you were on the same wagon to make a change.

We all over-react to depressing loses and to big program changing wins and this year has been a big roller coaster of a season. I'll admit that I didn't see the season unfolding this way and give Kirk and his staff tons of praise for making me eat some crow. Now, will they pull the football away from us again, when we try to kick it? Possibly, but it's been the most enjoyable and exciting football season in some time.

Go Hawks!!

Ferentz has been good for Iowa football, no doubt, but we are going to have a new coach eventually, good or bad. He will retire on his own terms, which he should. Maybe as soon as January.
I am one of the ones you mentioned of wanting him gone because of the Iowa State and Indiana losses, but let’s get this straight. It wasn’t just because of the Iowa State and Indiana losses. It is because of the numerous seasons where Iowa did essentially the same thing that they did this year. How many times have we lost to Iowa State and put ourselves behind the eight ball? It cost us a potential national championship appearance in 2002. How many games like taking a knee vs Ohio State in the shoe or Central Michigan at home have we endured? I was calling to go in a different direction before the 2015 magical season. I just think we know what we are going to get out of Ferentz and I don’t think it’s bad to aspire for more, even if it burns me in the ass. As I noted before, we are going to have to endure a coaching change eventually.

I still think he’s reached the end. I don’t want him fired.

I also think Iowa is going to give it to Seth Wallace and at that point Iowa football is dead to me, so I don’t take it lightly when I say I think it’s time.

What I wouldn't give to be inside Beths head to know where she's leaning...

I don't think she's got the desire nor the power to fire him, and so that leaves the only option as KF retiring when he wants. I'd suspect if he's retiring she already knows but obviously can't let on. I don't see KF as the type of guy who says, "Welp, I'm outta here, best of luck" after the bowl game ends. He dosen't wanna see that kind of thing happen to the program.

What do I think the reality is?

KF and Beth have already agreed when he leaves that Wallace is getting the job and he's leaving his retirement date open. They'll go through a faux hiring search/interview process but the job is his unfortunately, and then I'm forced to come on HN and root for nebraska and ISU in the game threads. My hope when that happens is he goes 0-24 in his first two years, gets fired, and then we can all get back to regularly scheduled programming. :)

Well I certainly was one of the idiots that said he should retire after the Indiana loss.

Coach Ferentz takes the losses hard. He looks tired because he is tired and depressed after the losses. But boy, he looked invigorated after the fantastic wins against the Badgers, Lions and Gophers. He looks refreshed now, doesn't he? It is amazing what winning does for the coaches, the players and the fans.

Win or lose, this is a good team that is playing hard right now. The next 4 games are going to be special. I don't think we will win them all, but I think they are going to compete well.

KIrk is going to coach at Iowa for several more years, I believe. He is fit and has plenty of gas in the tank.

Kirk has won 67% of Iowa's regular season games, starting in 2001. That's pretty amazing. 5 Big Ten Titles of some sort (conference and division), and 21 bowl games, soon to be 22, in the last 25 years. Unbelievable.

Well, there is an old saying where I grew up: "Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig likes it."

But I'll say this: Seth Wallace will never be a head coach at Iowa. When Kirk retires, Iowa will have lots of options. It is a great place to coach and the entire coaching profession knows it.

I'd be willing to place a friendly wager on that and even hope I lost (don't think I will).

Suggestions?

I hope what you think is reality is not the current reality or what becomes reality. I think we're all with ya on that front.

I think KF and Beth have mutual respect for each other, but they'll never have a 'buddy-buddy' relationship after she canned his son without consulting him. Theirs will always be an arms-length relationship.

What do I think the reality is?

Beth is developing her own list of potential head coaches. KF will give reasonable notice. Beth will ask for and receive his input. She'll do a few interviews and make a private decision, clear it with major donors, and away we go. I don't know a single major donor personally, but I'm guessing even if they've been in KF's corner over the years, they realize he has blind spots when it comes to hiring. I would think Beth has earned their trust by now.

I know a couple semi-major ones personally, and under your scenario the part that wouldn't go that way is her developing the list of candidates. She's not a football person. With Beth being who she is, the way it'd go is major donors do have buddy-buddy relationships with football people and they will offer her different names to put on that list.

I don't even know why this thread exists. The Hawks are 6-2, playing hard, playing well, the stadium is full, money is rolling in, and we have a John Deere logo on the field..................

I'm sure that's true. She'll cast a wide net collecting names of possible coaches.

But every BTen A.D. has a network of knowledgable contacts across the country -- otherwise they wouldn't be a BTen A.D. -- and today every BTen A.D. has a list of top candidates for head coach of their football team in their desk, on their computer, or in their head. If they didn't, it would be A.D. malpractice!

That's true, but at the end of the day money talks and the donors are where that's coming from. Yes there's TV revenue and all kinds of other things, but everyone gets that. Where programs differentiate each other is the donor money and they have a staggering amount of control over football and basketball programs.

Oh I wasn't considering anything towards her firing him. I was just leaning towards what her mindset is towards replacing him eventually whenever that day comes. Is she thinking Wallace would be the easy maintain the ship choice or someone else on staff? Or clean house and have a national search.

I don't think she's ever firing him. It's tough to see a scenario at this point where that'd be necessary. I think he'll eventually retire within the next 2 or 3 yrs. Maybe even this off season
