D Line Next year..........at least decent???

You people need to quit dissing on alvis. He was playing pretty well in 2011 before the knee injury. Remember the knee injury , after a few games this year you could see him favoring one leg and dragging it around.

I think alvis is giving it his all and would be pretty good without the bum knee.

I wasn't dissing on him, I was making the comment that he played pretty well in 2011 but wasn't sure if THIS YEAR he was completely healthy.

I agree I think he is giving it all he has, not saying there is a lack of effort.

I don't think you actually read my post otherwise you might have picked up on that.

Well there are only a few moves I know of that help a DE. Depending on a couple different things, you can then decide which move is going to produce the desired result. Not a ton of factors go into this and I think if the young guys train hard this winter, it will show from the inside out.

I dont want to come across as dissing Alvis either. I love the guy. He gives all he has and plays up to his potinial. Just dont think he is the most talanted guy on the team

Lack of experience, yes. They do have to go up against our OL, which I bet in the spring will be the talk of the B10 boys when they make their rounds.

By every measurable data point or statistic available, the single biggest myth about Iowa football is the strength of its OL. Based on this data, its far more likely that going against Iowa's OL will not adequately prepare the DL for much more than a pillow fight against a mid tier MAC team.

LOL, based on what, exactly.

Based on Iowa had the ability for its LB's to make plays by not having to take on OL...Iowa should be much less concerned about having DE get to the QB rather having a LB that can make a one on one play. The DL was not the weakness as much as some want to believe. Lack of quality LB is the place to start.

The myth is the misconception that Iowa's strenght on o-line is an individual effort by each player. Their strenght comes from working well as a unit to get the job done. The "stats" aren't going to show how well they play as the offensive scheme isn't meant to run up the score. It's to slower control the game's tempo. The slower the game, the smaller the offensive stats, especially when you have a ton of 3 and outs.

The power and strenght from an individual standpoind is solely on Brandon Scherff, that man is the strongest person the team. Before he got injuried he was throwing people around.

I agree. When Scherff went down our O line didn't look very good. I think the O line will be a big strength next year and the way Bullock was running at the end of the season and the way Weismann runs I think we can really control the ball. We just have to be able to make some plays when opponents bring 8-9 into the box. We need a couple playmakers at TE and WR. I kind of wish Garmon would have stayed and played in the slot. If he developed his hands he could have been great in space in one on one with DBs I think.

This offensive line was more of a power running offense and it got better game by game until PSU. But I also I think after the first game (NIU) when the O-line gave up 6 sacks the offensive scheme was designed/altered to hid this weakness of less than stellar pass blocking.

I think they went to the extreme, I think between that and Davis' system of reading defenses pre-snap Vandenberg keyed in on the shortest route possible way, way too much. Teams keyed in on this and started stacking the box and moving their CB's up to prepare for the quick pass.

Either the gameplan was to get rid of the ball quick or Vandenberg just didn't realize that he could have taken his time for a few down field plays and if he was in trouble to move around or throw the ball away. Since KOK clearly blew this part of QB development with all past QBs and also in the first 4 years of Vandenberg's career I think it really all came crashing down at the worst possible time and the offense took a huge face plant.

LO freaking L, LB was by far the strongest unit on the defense, and probably the strongest unit on the entire team. Including the leading tackler in the Big Ten (#6 in the nation), and two players in the Top 4 in the conference. You're an idiot.

Iowa's defensive scheme is set up for the D-line to contain but yet still put a level of pressure on the QB to force a bad play if not sack or tackle the QB for a short gain. Problem is that it has been since '10 since we have had anyone who could really do this. '10 the coaching staff didn't sub much and had so much attrition on the d-line it has decimated the d-line play since then.

The LB's are meant to be there to stop the rusher or be ready for pass defense by playing smart assignment football and play recognition (pass or run).

Iowa isn't stacked up to stop a running QB. Which is why running QBs run rampant on Iowa.

Iowa's offensive and defensive schemes start and finish with solid o-line and d-line play, always have always will.

I completely understand what you are saying here.

What I am saying is that the LB's didn't really make plays in the run game this year and that was Iowa's biggest problem.

Not getting pressure on the QB is one thing and I still think Iowa has to create pressure rather than letting pressure happen as their DL will not be good enough to do so. Iowa has to get more athletic at the LB position and the DE position to get pressure.

Iowa has some solid athletes coming in next year and needs to put them on the field in those pass rushing situations, just see what they can do, get them ready earlier.

People are going to jump me for this but...look at the best programs in the BIG, they put a lot of their freshman on the field to get them game experience early, it is the "wait for five injuries" policy it seems at Iowa for the most part, unless you are an OL.

Iowa can't stop a running QB because of the lack of athleticism at the LB/S positions.

They didn't make those plays because the d-line was getting worked over by the o-line and the o-line was in turn making to the second level and engaging the LB's. It is in turn the LB's job to shed that block and make the play but as I said before if the d-line does their job better the LB's will be free to make the play.

Vin has a pretty good grip on this. That is why it is called a team sport and everybody has to do their job.
We have a young group out there and they will come into their own. I just hope when this group gets to be JR's we still find some pt for the next lot.

I think this staff learned their lesson about riding d-line starters all game long. D-linemen need breaks especially if they can't stop anyone and the offense keeps getting 3 and outs.

I thought the DL was poor to start the season, but improved. I guess what I remember most was seeing Iowa LB's being a step behind or getting run over by RB's this year. Yeah, the DL was not great all year, but they weren't that terrible, very little depth and inexperience you should expect a season like that, but overall the DL was not awful.

What is alarming to me in watching them this year was how unathletic they were overall as a defensive unit, that is not what Iowa has been in the past, even some of their more average defenses have still had athletes.

The LBs do have very little depth and are extremely inexperienced beyond the starters.

The DL wasn't awful but the play of the d-line affects the play of the LBs.

Good LB's also make the DL like a lot better than they are.

Take a look at when Iowa had Hodge and Greenway.
