D Line Mysteries

A. Nelson and Epenesa flying off the edge. Bazata, Lattimore, and Matt Nelson clogging up the middle. Where does Hesse fit in? 3rd down? Will Golston play?--he has all the physical characteristics. Simon reminds me of N. Meier--maybe more..."athletic."

Simon is much quicker and athletic than Nate was. He also played the position in HS were Meier played 8 man football.

I think the coaching staff learned or I hope they learned in 2010 through a few years that you have to play your backups on the DLine especially when they are chasing mobile QBs all day. The hawk Dline would get gassed in those years and we lost a lot of games late in the 4th qtr.

The coaches rotated Dline better in 2015-16 and maybe started to in 2014. It has to be a beast of a position to play when you are carrying maybe too much weight for your heart and lungs anyway and 310 pound guys are pushing on you. They need to rotate so I dont see a problem getting guys snaps.

They are going to move guys around. Epy will be inside and outside. Same with Nelson and other guys.

Nathan and Parker will remain where they are.

I think the DLine will be fine.

I think we see a traditional base of Hesse/Lattimore/Bazata/Nelson, with a liberal rotation of the other nelson and Eppy playing both inside and out. In passing situations, I think we see 3 or 4 DEs on the field.
Would be great if Hesse could develop into an undersized DT a la King/Kroul/Klug becauseIf Eppy learns his responsibilities soon enough, I think he ends up getting starter-level snap counts by the end of the year at Hesse's expense. The physical difference between Eppy and Hesse, who has been in the strength and conditioning program for years, is SOOOOOO striking that the coaches won't be able to ignore it. No disrespect to Hesse, it's just that Eppy is a once in a lifetime talent who walks on campus with a near NFL-ready physique.
