D-ends

I can't confirm it, but I would guess we had to start the tallest D-Ends in the country this game, with Matt Nelson at 6'8 and Maj. Tony Nelson at 6'7. They are both just 'babies' still as a Soph. and a RSFrosh. Even if they can't get to the QB on a sack, it has to cause some havoc if they get their arms up. There was one play they showed from ground level where Bazata actually tipped the ball, but Matt Nelson had jumped with his arms up behind Bazata and the ball would have probably hit him in the face. I think these two have a bright future as they gain confidence and improve their technique over the next 2-3 years, and the WILL improve their strength and technique as they go, that's what Iowa does so well. With Hesse being only a Soph. and with Epenesa coming in, the future is certainly bright and 'deep' at DE for Iowa! In the meantime it will be fun to watch the 'Full Nelson' progress this year!!!
P.S. - and that doesn't even count that Brinks, who is playing quite a lot, is only a soph. (although, I think he has the 'frame' to move inside and he may next year) or Reiff (who is supposedly really coming on) or the 3-4 freshmen (Simon, McKnight, Gholston, etc.) that are highly thought of but we don't know much about yet. I expect Shulte (Karl Klug Jr.), Lattimore, and Brinks to help us inside next year as the only 'commodity' we have there is Bazata.

Really like the depth we are building at the DE spot. Combine that with AJ coming in and hopefully we get a commitment from Van Ginkel as well, we will be solidly stocked at DE.

Van Ginkel isn't coming. And with Hesse, M. Nelson, Maj. Nelson, Epenesa being here for the next 2 1/2-3 years, and him only having 2 yrs. of elegibility left, do you really think he'd play? Who's he going to beat out? Looking good in JC doesn't equate to upseeding proven B1G players.. sorry. I think he'll go somewhere where he can get a lot of PT right away, and I don't see that happening at Iowa. Don't need him...................I could be wrong, it happens now and then when I'm 'speculating', not very often though... :)

The staff offered him, so I assume they want him. Are you saying we have cooled on him, or he looks at our roster and decided to go where he can get playing time?

Last year Anthony Nelson was a skinny Fr whom I would have never thought was going to crack the starting rotation in just a year. Yet all of a sudden he develops, he can rush the passer, we have an injury, and bang there he is.

Either way Iowa will be fine (as with all cases with recruiting), one player isn't that big a deal to an overall program......well except QB, and CJ ;)

Concur with comments about deeper, more talented, d-line prospects...most important place to have strength.

Yes, I think he would play. I've seen too many games where the Iowa d-line is gassed in the fourth quarter. It would be nice to be in a situation where that might not be an issue. D-line depth is one of the key reasons why the SEC, particularly Alabama, has had so much success over the last decade. Also, I think I've heard at least a few speculate that Epenesa could eventually move to the inside.

Who is 'speculating' that??? You don't try to turn the number one defensive end in country into a DT, lol. And they aren't going to play a 5 man rotation.
