D coordinator happenings?

It's interesting to compare the tone between this thread and the one on TOS. Over there, people really seem to be buying it. Over here, much more skeptical. I will say, the original rumor poster has confirmed several times that he is 100% certain this is going to happen.

Just an observation.

I would be behind this if Norm's health really is declining. I would just like to know where TOS OP got his info?

This may or may not happen.....it seems more often than not that rumors with "legs" seem to turn out to be true....but who knows.

What I do know is that the posters who are claiming that it will never happen because KF doesn't want a "hot head" on his staff have never seen Coach K (can't spell his last name) during practice or on the sidelines during games. He is every bit the "hot head" that Stoops is....and maybe more so.

So if it doesn't happen, I can assure you with just about 100% certainty that it will have nothing to do with Stoops' demeanor or hot-headedness not meshing with KF's stoicness (if that's even a word).

I agree Norm is a man with great integrity and character, if he says it's time, well we have to let him do what he needs to do. That said I hope he is as involved with the program as he wants to be for as long as he can/wants to. He has earned that much respect.

I actually heard rumblings about this about when I was in IC for the NW game. Kind of just shrugged it off as another rumor, but maybe there is something too it.

agreed. if this is about norm, it is about health/energy.

the thing about norm, is he doesn't recruit out of the office. i bet Stoops is a very good recruiter out on the road. great contacts, texas contacts, ohio contacts, etc, etc, etc,.

i like this if true - and i, for one, don't think passion = a great coach. i think if the pressure is off of him, as it would be in this role, he wouldn't be crazy. especially given that isn't the m.o. of this staff.

+1

The morning show in Des Moines was asking why Norm didn't get criticized as much as KOK, when in their mind anyway, he clearly deserves it this year. The answer is simple, although I agree the defense has not been good this year, but Norm has built a ton of good will over the years. Yes we sometimes get sick of the "bend but don't break" scheme, but we have won a ton of games in recent years because of our D. KOK has not earned anywhere near the level of respect Norm has.

While I am skeptical ... there are factors about the rumor that make sense.

- Norm has had health issues and Ferentz would be more than happy just to keep him on in a consultant capacity. Thus, Norm knows he's loved by the program ... and he also knows that he can back off without totally stepping away.

- Coach Wilson and particularly Coach Parker have gotten looks by other programs for DC spots ... and even looks for head-coaching gigs at smaller places. However, folks have to remember that the Ferentz Hawkeyes have something that few program have .... ABSOLUTE COACHING STABILITY. What's more ... the coaches are all very close ... and it sounds like they all really like working with one-another. In other words ... not only do they have job security ... but it's the sort of job that you love going to! The point of this statement is that I'm willing to bet that Coach Parker and Coach Wilson are very pleased with their jobs. I doubt that they're just sticking around so that they can work their way up the ladder.

- A lot of folks might think that Ferentz would only hire from within ... however, when it comes to "replacing" Norm ... there is currently ONLY 3 guys from 'within' who would really make sense ... Wilson, Parker, or Aiken. However, IF someone from the outside were to come in ... they'd also have to have connections to the program AND have a resume that trumps the aforementioned trio. I think that the resume part only comes into play in order to ensure that everybody gets along okay and so nobody's nose gets out of joint. To that end, that's where Mike's great rep on D comes into play. Furthermore, Mike has head-coaching credentials ... something that Coach Parker and Coach Wilson would possibly be willing to defer to.

But there IS a catch. Mike Stoops definitely appears to be a bit of a volatile type. Thus, there is the question as to how well that sort of personality would mesh with the rest of the coaches. One thing that I know is that Ferentz wouldn't make a move if he felt that it would damage the great chemistry that our coaching staff has. Thus, if Mike DOES get the nod .... it will be because he's perceived as a "good fit."

Is he having more health issues? I haven't heard anything about his health this year. I assumed he is healthier this year, than last because I hadn't heard anything.

Have not heard anything regarding Norms health this year as well until this past weekend while tailgating at Indiana game.

Had someone tell me they heard that Norm is now having complications with his good foot/leg. Can't remember what the medical terminology was for the problem, but the person who told me this said amputation is not out of the equation. I do believe this has come on fairly recently, but can't confirm that either.

Take it for what its worth. Only heard this from one person, but i do trust the person who told me.

As a coach I think there is one thing you are leaving out in all these arguments. This staff needs a fiery vocal guy. All coaches surround themselves with assistant coaches that bring out things that they don't have, especially personality things. My best example is Osborne at Nebraska, he had a defensive coordinator in McBride that was a gun slinging, harley riding wear his emotions on his sleeve type of guy. I for one think this makes perfect sense something this staff needs...a guy who can rally the troops.

You have to understand that on this site it will always be that way. If I said I was 100% certain that tomorrow is Wednesday someone will argue with me about it.

Because tomorrow ISN't Wednesday. I flew to the other side of the international date line before I read your post so tomorrow is some day other than Wednesday. I will return to Iowa and reread your post and by then tomorrow will be SATURDAY!

Get your facts and your calendar for that matter, fixed for heavens sake. Some people are relying upon the accuracy of this board!

A simple look at the total and complete rebuilding job of the defense that will need to be done next year in addition to a coach who might be better served in some kind of fundraising, associate Ad type roll leads me to believe there is something here.

Also Jon - it is possible that the long term plan was for Norm to go another 3-5 years and then have an heir apparent on the staff at that time. If this is true, it is because they need the help now and next year.

JD isn't privy to the succession planning at Iowa.

Once amputations of the sort Norm had last year begin, they don't normally stop for older diabetics. This is why I was actually shocked that he came back. I was pretty sure they would wait until the end of the season and then assign a replacement. I also thought this was a reason why they didn't give anyone interim DC duties last year, but just assigned duties across the staff.

Remember, Cubs great Ron Santo had his legs amputated below the knees a while back and that was all they took from him until he died. Of course lifestyle has a lot to do with it too.

Correct. Also if anyone read Jon's link he posted about KF talking injuries this week, that article says Kf was in talks for 18 months. Doesnt mean much I know but it could mean they are in talks with Stoops. How much contact with the program he can have during those talks, I dont know.
Also I have been thinking about this for a bit now and I dont think the D needs an overhaul. I think we need 2 330 pounders in the middle that can bull rush and make for some double teaming. I think you do that and we slide some people out, we have a good front 4 and the rest just falls into place. So instead of man down, we are 2 man down from being as good as Wisky. Like I said I would be scouring the country for some very big and very good juco DL's this year, because I think we will have another good O next year.

LOL the dude was a HC. He's not going to take a postion coach job anywhere. It's just not how it works. There is no reason this couldn't be true, not saying it is, just saying it makes sense and is within the realm of possibility.

Tell that to Jerry Glanville, he went from HC in the NFL to DC at a mid major college.
