Cyclone Basketball Envy

A tip of the cap from this Iowa fan to Fred Hoiberg and the Iowa State Cyclones. To go into CHA and manhandle your hated rival without your second leading scorer and most talented player is impressive. It's becoming more and more apparent that Hoiberg is building something special in Ames, and if McCaffrey doesn't significantly upgrade Iowa's recruiting, talent, and athleticism the Iowa/ISU rivalry won't be a rivalry anymore. It's one thing to be outplayed by your opponent, but I think most would agree with me that Iowa was outclassed last night!

What could Hoiberg do at UNC if they made a coaching change?
It could be scary.

I know some argue with his use of transfers, but you can't argue with the results. He won't leave ISU for a college job, but I think it's a forgone conclusion he'll eventually take his talents to the NBA. I'm thinking McCaffrey and the entire Big 12 is hoping that happens sooner rather than later!

I'm still holding out hope for Fran to put things together but yep..as of now we haven't won dick and it's getting to be quite a few years.

As of right now Fred seems to be kicking Fran's ***. I totally didn't expect that.

This team could still put it together...trying to learn to play together since last year was so much Marble. I think we have good parts..we'll see. Could still get it going or not..

If they don't..well, you don't usually see coaches get hot after 6 or 7 years of bad teams.

It starts with a university that has put an emphasis on wining no matter what it takes. They do not spend foolish time lauding the exploits of academics. They focus on doing everything they can to win from the President on down. They accept getting their hands dirty if they have to.

We have just been lucky they have not been able to fully put it together in football (yet) even though they manage to beat us any way.

It's everything but wining from the President to the AD to the coaches at Iowa.

Years ago that was the mindset at Iowa and it worked. Jealousy, arrogance and complacency eroded that.

I actually feel bad for Fran because he wants to win but has to work in a suffocating box.

I'm beginning to think Sally Mason and her administration's politically correct attitude about everything is a bigger problem than we realize with Iowa athletics at this moment. But, yeah, hard to admit this: Hoiberg's got it going in Ames. If they continue to shoot that well this season and play tough inside, a Final Four team? I'd say yes.

I don't feel bad for him. He's making a lot of money coaching basketball. He and his staff are solely responsible for our lack of talent, especially at the guard position. With the possible exception of Gessll, I don't see one B1G caliber player in our backcourt.

Would Gessell start for ISU, Texas, other good power 5 schools?

I think Fran is a good coach, not a great coach. He won't build us into a Kansas, a Kentucky or even an ISU. We'll win some games, make it into the tourney once in a while. Ho hum. Not what a fan base is looking for. But not bad enough to fire.

Exactly. They got hot on the right night and everyone thinks they're Final Four bound. We're turning into Clown fans.

Trust me. I'm no ISU fan, but I don't let mt Iowa fandom keep me from appreciating good basketball teams. ISU is legit!

It's 100% this. Iowa sports are irrelevant because Sally Mason wants them to be irrelevant. Sports embarrass most of academia. She's much more interested in political and sociological pursuits. For Mason, athletics needs to be just good enough to keep the same staff and to keep the rubes buying tickets and donating money.

Fran deserves credit for digging us out of the mess created by Alford/Lickliter, but recent recruiting struggles have me worried. Obviously Fran wanted to bring in an impact transfer last spring, but was unable to seal the deal with a number of guys who decided to go to Creighton, Arizona State, etc.

Here's one thing Fran & Kirk Ferentz have in common.

I hate isu. I hate their their smarmy fanbase.

I respect their bb program and fred hoiberg.

I love the Hawks and I have faith that Fran will continue to build this team. Had they not lost out on Tyler Ullis at the last moment through no fault of their own, things would be VERY different.
