Cunningham on CJ's performance and passing

I think Ed Cunningham is a pretty good analyst and knows his stuff. He has some strong praise for CJ today and at one point said he thought CJ was looking like a good pro QB now. And CJ did have a really good day throwing darts and laser beams. Some nice throws. I have heard others say the same thing I have noticed that Cunningham said today that if CJ maybe put a little more loft on some deep throws he might make those connections. I think one of the issues with connecting on the deep throws is a timing thing but a little more air would let receivers run under those balls. Last year CJ used to throw those longer passes with more loft.

Cunningham Iam sure you heard said CJ made some great throws on the run even though injured.

I think he is one of ESPN/ABC's best analysts since Gary Danielson left for CBS.

If CJ can continue the throwing touch and accuracy he had today then it bodes well for the hawks.

CJ's throwback, across his body, running to left, to pick-up the crucial 1st down, to Vandeberg, I think? That was a throw that most QB's would never complete. It was a beauty.

CJ was 19-31 and had at least 3 passes batted down at the LOS. I cant remember if he threw any away intentionally but 3 misses were deep balls. So CJ was about 19-25 on his clean passes and was hitting guys in stride and making some incredible throws. Jewell and King are leading the defense and CJ is leading this offense.

and it was a side-armed throw where he also had to lead Vandeberg, who was running in the opposite direction. So, qb with a groin injury, running to his left, under pressure, throwing with his right hand across his body, side arm, and has to lead the receiver who is running full speed in the opposite direction. I don't think this play can be overstated. It was a Sunday play...a John Elway type play. 9-0.

It all works nicely for CJ (and the team) when there is balance.

Rushing 234 yds.
Passing 233 yds.

CJB needs to put more air under his deep balls. I am an idiot and immediately when he released those 2 deep balls to Tevaun even I thought they were overthrown, which they were. Its like Cunningham even said, get some air under the ball and let the receiver go get it or draw pass interference.

I love seeing CJB throwing deep though. Tevaun had his man beat both times and Jerminic Smith had the defense beat as well he just wasn't ready for the ball. They need more of that

The deep ball to Jerminic was perfectly thrown. By the time Smith knew it was in his hands it was too late for him to react. That would've been 6 had he seen the ball.

"we have a trade ... the Packers have traded with the Redskins to move up to the 7 hole ..."

"and with the 7th Pick Green Bay selects CJ Beathard of Iowa ..."

now that would make me very happy

Good WRs can make an average QB look good by making plays on the ball. Iowa isn't in that situation. CJ hit JS on the hands and he never looked until the ball was there! That was all QB. Jerminic will get a feel for it with more experience. I don't think he realized he had already dusted the guy covering him.

Could the groin injury contribute to CJ not having enough air under his balls?

That doesn't sound like I mean it.

Go Hawks! 15-0

I agree that his deep throws look more straight line than last seasons. He was dropping them in the bucket last season. He certainly has the arm strength to put more air underneath them.

The very first time I saw CJ live was the spring practice with first year Derrick Willies. CJ hit Willies on the so called 'skinny post' about 30 -40 yards downfield with a low arching rocket throw. the throw was perfect and DW waltzed into the endzone.

Just watching CJ I think he likes to hit these guys in stride with the missile throws and he normally can, maybe just a bit off right how.

That being said T Smith and J Smith and Hillyer and Vandy can go up to compete for more lofted passes.

I gave you a thumbs up for your reply above.

Agree with you on MVPs but I'd add the O line to that conversation. They were great today. CJ had a ton of time on pass plays and they managed to grind out what they could on the ground. Hoosiers were tough up front and selling out on the run.

If seen a lot of people on here post about having arm strength to put air under the ball. But I've spent my entire life believing it takes more arm strength to throw a 50 yard pass on a rope than a 50 yard pass with air on it. What's the deal?

Not sure which announcer it was but I wanted to correct hm When he said "No one can make the claim that they had Iowa in the hunt for college football playoffs."

I know a guy by the name of Hawknick and I'm pretty certain he had the Hawks winning the national championship!!!
