Cullly, don't tug on Superman's cape!

After Cully drove on Turner, made a great basket, and drew the foul, he put on his "How do ya like that sucka?" face and started walking toward the fallen Buckeye, talking away. Gatens pulled him back. The TV version only showed a brief second of it; the replay at the arena showed the entire thing. From that moment on, Turner played with what might be called a renewed enthsiasm and Cully's game, including two attempted layups early in the shot clock that the coach didn't like, faltered.

Payne and Turner are both Chicago area guys who have played vs each other many times in AAU ball,I suspect, if not on the HS courts. I bet that they know each other. Turner is a good kid, from all evidence, and respectful on the court. I caught the Cully ''moment'' and it was not too over the top or anything.
Turner is a money player and is going to probably get his eventually no matter what...which is why he will be a top 5-6 pick next spring in the NBA draft. I love the kids game...you can tell he was well-coached at St Joes by all time Illinois HS winningest coach Pingatore...just like Tony Freeman,Demetri McCamey and Jon Peoples(ND).

The true frosh Cully Payne schooled a National Player of the Year contender after the Buckeyes had been getting a way with a lot of hands-on defense. He took it past Evan, defended him off with his off-hand, got the bucket, and the foul.

I liked it.

I think Evan was sparked because his team was getting beat by 7 on the road to a team they didn't think they should have been losing to. He can take over when we wants. Lighty started the charge, Turner finished.

I had no problem with Cully in this one.

Did you also see Turner give May a shove then throw the ball at him after a May blocking foul in the second half?

Additionally, yes, Turner upped his intensity after that moment with Payne...but it initially resulted in a bunch of forced shots & we had him out of his game. It was later that ET was able to find success.

I agree with this. Both Chicago guys and it seems like you tend to get to know the guys that are on the top level of AAU in your area for the few classes around you.

I'd expect to see more of that over the next few years with Richmond, Head, Dujan, Brust, Smith, Paul, Payne, Crawford, Shurna, Johnson, etc. all being Chicago guys and probably getting major minutes in the B10. The Chicago area is giving the B10 a lot of talent.

Turner was getting all he could handle from May and he didn't like it one bit. After a foul was called on May earlier in the game Turner tossed the ball at May's gut, at that point Cole got involved. I love the attitude, the swagger the Hawks are getting. Cully was no doubt talking some smack and like Spank I have no problem with it.

I agree....but all the same just let your play speak for itself. But I like his spark.

I like his spark too. A lot of us don't like it when other players do that sort of thing. But I'm with you 100% -- ley your play speak for itself. Or as some football guy said about antics after touchdowns, act like you've done it before, hand the ball to the ref, and head back to the sidelines.

I agree with both of you to a certain extent (esp with Cully being a frosh), but it was getting chippy out there. I can understand why he did it, and if it was a product of his grit and aggressiveness, I can live with it.

I like what he's been doing the last couple games. He's been a leader on the court.

Wouldn't Cully's actions get him the "thug" label around here if he was on the other team? I personally have no issue with what happened, but you need to be a lot wiser in talking stuff to the best player in the gym, which was Turner again.

Before the game they were at half court doing handshakes and talking to each other for a good couple of minutes so I feel like they talk to each other or have in the past. I would personally rather see Cully keep his swag to himself when the teams record is what it is, but that's just me.

The only problem I had with it, was that it was basically an offensive foul on Cully, imo. He used his off arm to ward Turner off & gain an advantage.

But no, giving a stare from 6 feet away after an and-1 basket doesn't quite qualify as 'thugish' behavior.

The stare was all they showed on tv. He walked toward Turner, talking all the way. But, going along with Jon, anything that will tick off Illinois fans is fine with me.

And Illinois fans hate Iowa players who play gritty. Players like Moe, Jaacks, Settles, and especially Brunner really got under their skin.

I have always been of the opinio that a Fired up, fist pumper, hustler, little smack talker type of "thug" is perfectly ok for fans to have a double standard with. Your team sometimes needs a guy like this but it's still ok to hate that in a guy from another team. I'm not big on double standards but this is one I have always accepted as ok, although I usually develop quite a bit of respect for the opponents players like this once they graduate.

Oh, please.....IMHO, this is all hyper-bull.

Thugs undercut people, intentionally hard foul, push a player down, etc., Cully is not a thug, nor should be perceived as one; by anyone. I would venture a guess that the IL fans wouldn't have even noticed anything if it was blown out of proportion here.

You go Cully, its about time someone showed someone grit and attitude, and especially our PG.

Oh, note to FB team, please don't be the bully's of the Big Ten anymore, people will call you a thug, including our own fans.
