Cub's trades

The Cubs finally became sellers at the deadline and dealt Lilly and Theriot, and picked up DeWitt in return. D Lee declined a trade to the Angels, because he loves Chicago, but I don't see him in a Cub's uniform next year since his contract is up.

I love the switch of Theriot (30 yrs, righty) for DeWitt (24 years, lefty) who has 4 years left on his contract. DeWitt can hit for a similar average as Theriot but with more power as well. I love this trade but there are still 3 2B on the roster (DeWitt, Fontenot, and Baker). I only see DeWitt with the team next year as the other two will go away somehow. P.S. DeWitt can back up 3B.

I also think the Cubs try to part ways with Fukudome, Zambrano, and Silva. They would then have money to go after a few free agents (Gonazalez mostly) and maybe pick up some pitching for the rotation.

I like the young bullpen, as I've always said don't spend $$ on the BP. They can be shaky too. I think the components are their.

It will be an intersting off season for sure.

Also Colvin needs to play everyday, and NOT be a leadoff man. I think he's a 3-5 man in the lineup.

Castro will be the future leadoff man, when he learns more patience

I like DeWitt over Theriot as well, though many lady Cubs fans I'm sure are devastated. And the sooner Fontenot goes, the better. I'm sure he won't be around next year, since his BFF is gondie now.
Fukudome, it was a nice try, and fun for a while there, but good-bye.
Colvin, though, I don't think is a 3 or 4 spot hitter yet. Maybe a 5, though I'm sure Santo would tell you this kid is the next Ted Williams.
The young relief pitching I have to disagree with you on. They have been horrible, unless you count not quite sucking as bad as Bob Howry as being decent. I don't, and I think they should spend tons of money on the bullpen. They should spend tons of money on every position they need. This is the Cubs, and it's been too long.

it'll be interesting its pretty sad right now to be a cubs fan i stopped getting updates on my phone because i was sick of getting 15 text messages a game from our opponents scoring

Why spend money on the bullpen. How did Grabow work out this year, Hawkins, Remlinger, Gregg? Why spend money on the middle relief when they don't pan out either? This is just my opinion. Keep working with Marshall as the setup man and Marmol and just fill in from there. And you forgot to mention that Z is gone. Don't think there is a way for him to stay.

I think Colvin develops into a 3 hitter. Right now he's a 5, maybe a 2. Just to much power to be a 1.

I'm just praying that we put our entire team on waivers and someone takes at least one of our awful contracts...we should have been having Z starting so he could be auditioning for this very reason.

Ha, that would be interesting, except they would take Colving, Castro, and DeWitt who are nice and cheap and leave us with the baggage.

Anyone else think D-Lee was being selfish by not taking the trade. Read somewhere he is even building a house in So Cal.

Ok not the whole team, just anyone not named Colvin, Castro, and obviously we just got DeWitt...DLee can suck it now. If he loves it so much in Chicago go play out the year in LA, then come back next year for a cut price...

Yes, those geezers (Remlinger, Grabow...) were bad pick-ups, and I agree they should keep and continue to develop Marshall and Marmol. But at this point they spend some more money, or it is going to get ugly.

I think the Cubs are going to spend some money next year, but I don't know how much depending on who they can move.

Assuming that they can't move anyone else with substantial contracts I see this happening:

Signing Adrian Gonzalez. so lineup looks like this:

SP
Wells
Gorzellany
Dempster
Z
Cahsner or Silva

1B Gonzalez (Nady)
2B DeWitt, Fontenot, Baker
SS Castro
3B Ramirez
C Soto
LF Soriano
CF Byrd
RF Colvin/Fuk

Relievers:
Marmol
Marshall
Young guys

I think they need to let Z and Silva go. Not worth the money and sign a decent SP. Maybe Ted Lilly comes back. Or trade for a bigger named starter.

Also Fontenot and Baker or both need to be let go, and bring in another utility man like Omar infante, though the Braves would never part with him

Fukudome needs to go, and let Colvin play. Nady can spell in the OF, or let a young guy give it a shot.

As for relievers, I think you can sign somebody, but don't spend a ton. It's a reliever and we've got some young guys who can (soemtimes) get it done.

last night the 26 hits allowed to the brewers tied a franchise record. the cubs have lost six in a row and been outscored 63-17 in the six games. on the wrigley field scoreboard, normally yellow numbers are posted at the bottom of the board to indicate team hits. As seen above, the scoreboard guys don't have any yellow numbers larger than 25 -- they had to use a white 26 to indicate the Brewers' record-tying number of hits
