Create a playoff system

You either have to have 8 conference champs. Or 4 conference champs. No other numbers make sense. Problem is do you want the Sun Belt champ to get into the playoffs? What is to make ND, Texas, Boise, or BYU for that matter just get into a crap conference and run the table to the playoffs?

An 8 team playoff system will never happen as it would destroy the bowl system. There is way to much money involved in this bowl system. The only possibility is a +1 BCS bowl game.

I would be fine with 8 conferene champs going for it

One drawback is Iowa will never play in it ever.
Never say never.... but rarely. In this system the fat get fatter and things get even tougher for schools like Iowa. Most fans dreaming of a play-off system cheer for a team that would be hurt by it.
Exactly I mean I envision if OSU and UM know they win BIG they have national title shot...conference quickly becomes big 2 again.

Actually, most fans are just not smart enough to think this whole thing through on a number of levels.

They see the end result and think that is where the problem must lie. However, the problem starts with the conferences themselves. The solution must be a holistic solution that considers change at all levels.

Here are some of the silly things people have proposed.

1) 9-2 Arkansas State and 10-2 NIU should have a shot at a NC, when 11-1 Bama should not.

2) #4 Stanford should be able to play for an NCA, while #5 and P12 Champ Oregon, wouldn't.

3) If Oregon beats Wisky and Stanford beats OSU, there would be no controversy as to which of the two would play the winner of LSU / Bama.

For a college playoff there are two ideas in my mind one that involves a smaller number of teams (4 to start, they will never come out with more to start) and only Conference champions.

If you want something that has higher participation like the NCAA bball and doesn't involve a significant higher number of games I have an idea. It also almost gives the idea of a double chance at postseason yet, makes the regular season more interesting.

High participation idea:
1. Go to 13 games each year in regular season(this may be needed so major conferences teams can keep a 7th home game). All conference games are finished on the 11th week in the season. Each team's schedule is TBA on 12 & 13th week. (Might need to have a 2 week period from week 11 to week 12 to facilitate scheduling travel, etc), also not a bad time of year for teams to get healthy.
2. 32 teams are chosen and seeded and use the last 2 weeks of the regular. This is called the sub playoff rounds, as the first two sub playoff rounds are played on the college campuses and see #3 for more explanation. 3. It is designed each team gets a home game and each a road game. If this can't be worked out some type of a revenue sharing fund is designed to compensate the teams not getting a home game and the TV rights of that conference because tv rights would be he the home team due to part of the reg. season.
4. Everyone plays the last two weeks whether or not in the sub playoff rounds, or a loser in round 1 because these are actually regular season games and part of the schools revenues they depend on. Even teams not in the 32 get an attractive as possible couple of games(1 home & 1 on the road). This should greatly improve the quality of non-conference games. **Maybe play non sub playoff games are played on Friday nights or start by 12 EST time on Sat. to allow for sub-playoff games to be highlighted in the th 3:30 EST & 8 PM EST slots. All teams finishing with at least a 7-6 record can still go to bowls whether in the sub playoff or not. This plan does hurt travel for the bowls because no one has traveled more than current reg. season games now, since the games are played on college campuses. I think this allows fans to actually embrace the bowl system more because we will have had a true national champion decided included with a bowl system, not at the expense of the bowl system.

6. No conference Champ. games instead we have the round of 8. conferences get $$$ if there teams are participating. Conferences with teams in this round get paid on participation, or more based on higher participation.

To illustrate (with the exception of a 13th game so colleges could maximize revenues) how it would be no more games than the current system with a +1 model.

12th game reg. season-round of 32, everyone plays a game
13th game reg. season-roundof 16, everyone plays a game
final 8(used to be conference champ. games)-8 teams play
Final Four-bowls-same number of teams playing bowls now
Championship game- 2 teams

lol, you get points for creativity.

But no, your idea would ruin the bowl system and, again, there is way to much money involved to trash it.

Points will be awarded for thinking outside of the box, ability to increase revenue while maintaining excitement, and ability to please all parties involved.
You are not going to see 8 teams or 16 teams in a playoff. It simply won't happen.

Kirk Herbstreit on ESPN the other night was pushing for a 4 team playoff (the PLUS ONE scenario). I think that will happen next year, and would be much better than 2 teams. Okie State really got the shaft this year.

Why would it ruin the bowl system? The same teams playing in bowls under my scenario are playing for the same thing they are today. There is no additional travel(the same # of fans that go to away games that are reg. season games now would travel under mine). We would just have a more exciting reg. season.

I'm not planning on this happening, yes the +1 is the only thing that may happen in the near future but the OP asked for ideas and I think my idea preserves the importance or even enhances the reg. season, and still allows the bowls to operate and with very little diminished value & doesn't significantly expand the number of games played under a +1 scenario.

I don't think so.

My system uses the 4 BCS games as the quarterfinal round of an 8 team playoff.

The traditional BCS bowl games have already been all but destroyed already, since they no longer have any say in who wins the title. They've all become consolation prizes at best.

If anything, my system will bring back relevance to the BCS bowls, generate a ton of excitement and money, and will give 8 schools a chance at the title.

I don't think there is a perfect system, but I would love to see this.

Current regular season schedules, conference championship games and bowl games remain intact.

Current ranking system gets revamped. I'd say give the official poll back to the AP. Also, this poll won't be released until week 4 of the season. No more official pre season rankings. We'll let the athlons, phil steele's etc create excitement with their previews, predictions and rankings.

At the end of final regular season/confernce championship weekend (Dec 3), the top 4 teams in the AP will be selected for the Final Four. The two Final Four matchups will be played Dec 10 at the site of the higher seeded team. There will be no special requirements for these 4 teams (such as conference champions). If all 4 top ranked teams just happen to come from the same conference then all 4 will be in the final four.

The top bowl games will go back to their traditional set ups. Rose will be Pac 12/Big 10, etc. The bowl games will also return to more traditional dates. Jan 1st will feature the Cotton Bowl, Capital One Bowl, Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl. All of the other Bowl Games will be played prior to Jan 1.

The national Championship game will be played 1 week later, at a site that is rotated between Pasadena, Phoenix, Dallas, New Orleans and Miami.
