Craziest stat regarding the game I've ever seen....

In the last 10 years, there have been a total of 500 college football games played where one team averaged 7.7 yards per play or more and the opponent avg'd 4.3 yards per play or less. The higher yards per play team in those games was 498-2. 498-2!!

Iowa State from Saturday night is one of the "2" in that W/L record.

Credit to Bret Blum for that stat.

It was more than ten years ago but I still don't know how we beat Minny in 2004 with six rushing yards.

Meanwhile not one but two gopher backs gouged us for over 150 apiece.

But Schlicker kicked five FG's that day. And Chad Greenway made a huge defensive play to push them just out of field goal range.

Somehow we won 29-27, about three weeks after beating Penn State 6-4.

That was one of the strangest games I've ever watched. Hawkeyes couldn't run the ball; Gophers couldn't pass. They tore us up on the ground and we went 300+ and 2 TDs through air. I don't think total yards were drastically in MN's favor. Both offenses were extremely one-dimensional.

Greenway hadn't had a great day by his standards, our linebacking corps has whole didn't have the kind of game we were accustomed to, but he finally got to one of their backs in the backfield at the most opportune moment of the game for his only TFL. Biggest play of the game given the circumstances and the fact that we hadn't been able to stop their run game at all.

Didn't they have Maroney and Barber on that team? Those guys were freaking amazing.

I saw a couple of stats to add to that. ISU was 19-22 for 282 yards passing from their own territory, but 6-13 for 45 yards in Iowa territory.

Also, ISU was in Iowa territory 6 times and only got a FG (both TD's were from their own territory), while Iowa had the ball in ISU territory 5 times and scored all 5 times (other than the final kneel downs).

I’m pretty sure that was an Iowa victory.
It was Kirk's kind of victory.

I remember him being interviewed after Wisconsin in 2015 and gushing about how that was his kind of football game.

That 10-6 snoozefest had to look like two brontosaurus fighting in a tar pit to the rest of the college football world.

Some Clown tried to convince me today that this stat is why the AP voters didn't raise up Iowa....because they knew who REALLY won.

Maybe the most pitiful argument I've ever heard in my life.

Not based on two plays. Based on 4. If we wouldn't have allowed those big plays and caught the passes we should or could of.
It's a different game and a decisive win.

I was at that game in Minny. MN had like 500 yards rushing. Barber and Maroney gashed us. BUT, I believe it was Greenway that I huge stuff in backfield, that backed up the kicker just enough to miss the game winning field goal at buzzer

Love this stat. Going to further rub this in to my Cyclone fans that are already at the ledge...

What Bretski doesn’t mention is that the only reason the YPP is so high is due to the two plays when our DBs got burned (including a flea flicker). The rest of the night was mundane as shit for their offense (or lack thereof).

Blum is like the mods over at CyFan, trying to scrape up any little shred of a stat to make them feel better about shooting themselves in the dick and both feet.

It’s like watching somebody struggle to get the last tiny little bit of queso out of the jar for five minutes, only to have the chip snap off and get dip all over their hand.

According to BTN ISU only had 9 offensive possessions for the entire game. When you turnover the ball on two of them it makes the offensive stats less meaningful. You can subtract all the yards gained before the Purdy fumble and you can say that ISU gave Iowa a minute and 39 seconds of possession time. In the end it comes to one word SCOREBOARD.

The pass to Weiting and him going out of bounds was a bad event, but I liked that Iowa decided to pass and try to get the first down. Iowa's field position was good at the time and the punting was going to leave ISU deep in its territory with 45 seconds an no time outs if they completed and did not get the first down.

If Iowa is going to have a signature season, it needs to continue to be underappreciated, underrated, and overall, discredited by pollsters and the media. This is the best environment for the Hawkeyes to spawn a special season.

Please, many more "ugly wins" for the Hawkeyes.

So what you're saying is, there's three types of lies...
