Could our O-linemen be healthy and athletic +10-15 more lbs.

i dont believe he had a gallery year at all. Bulaga??? yeah, maybe. not sure.

I didn't say he had a Gallery type year. I said that's what I was expecting after all the hype surrounding him. I still don't think he is as dominant as he could be.

yeah, i know, i was just used your comparison and made my own statement, i wasn't saying you said that. no worries

He must have been a walk on? Don't remember him being recruited and he was on the roster on hawkcentral or hawkeyeinsider.

I just have never heard of him. Interesting.

His parents are Mike and Linda Haywood, is there something off with this, I have no idea.

That is weird, anybody know what up with that? I know we have several coming in around 270, but for the middle a couple of powerful 300's would be ideal ( I think). Put the fast, 270's at end.

This year it looks like Reiff and Sherrff have the frame to add 15 pounds without losing any speed. The rest of the line looked at the right size if you follow that subjective idea. Hawks might have to bring in o-line recruits that are a little taller to add the weight or already at 300 lbs.

Reiff needs to add 15lbs of muscle and work on his technique for another year, then come out an be a top 3 pick as a true left tackle. He will make more money that way over his career...just ask Ross Verba or Jake Long.

Scherff is going to be full size...315+...plenty big.
I was very impressed by Ferentz ability on QB sneaks...I think he is fine.

Gamefilm had very good grades on the whole line..including Tobin,so that is very encouraging. Next year...Reiff,Tobin,Ferentz,McMillan,Scherf....that is a line that is big..3 of 5 over 300lbs,and athletic enough to get the job done. Add a better blocking CJ to the TE position...should be solid.

I think Cover3 is correct as the last poster said and some linemen could add some weight and still be quick off the ball.

My observation on 3rd and 4th and one is that some play calls are slow developing. Those plays should be lead by a fullback and not always are and quick hitting.

Cam was my On Iowa guide this year. He is a walk on. Junior I believe. Played rugby, huge. Idk how good he is but hes a genuine guy and has a good work ethic.

Yah, it seems like they might've misspelled the parents' name, but maybe not. Weird.

I would agree with the rest of your assessment. I think we will be better because we can usually find a solid RT and we can do better than Gettis' constant penalties. Scherff played better than Tobin IMO. Would losing Rieff really be that bad if he has another year like this one? I'm anxious to see how guys like McMillan and Van Sloten can perform. I wonder if we will see Blythe, Heiar or Clark make it into the lineup anywhere.

Scherff played better than Tobin? I guess you give no credence to the coaches or Hakeyegamefilm. Scherff has ability, but he missed his assignments too many times. When the compeition level increased mid-season Scherff struggled. That is why he sat the last few games. I hope he improves because we need him to play at a higher level. Gettis has had a great season, can you tell me how he compared to others concening penalties? He will probably get drafted but I guess that means you would not have played him this year "in your opinion".

If I had to guess Gamefilm's overall grades on Iowa o-linemen this year it would leave the lineman from top to bottom as follows:

Reiff
Gettis- tied with Zusevics
Ferentz
Tobin
Scherff

If Reilly returns,we should be good on the line again.

^this, kuntz hit the nail right on the head, Wisky was pushing tcu around enough early to keep running an wear them out but no they start getting cute.

Just like the Troy Smith - Ted Ginn buckeye team against I think it was Florida in NCG when osu pounded right down the field on the first possesion for a touchdown but after that they thought, well we better throw the ball cuz we have Ginn and Gonzalez, and others. Stupid, play to your strength, wear them down then if you are ahead in the 4th you can call whatever you want.

Back to your central point; " believe our O-line play is very nearly always good to great, but can we improve the program by going from 'good to great' to DOMINANT"

There are some good prospects in the program, McMillan(JR) at 305, MacMillan(So) at 288, Scherff (RS Fr) at 310, Donnal (RS Fr) at 302 among others. And if (big IF) Reiff stays he could bump up another 5-10 pounds.

Iowa still has a long way to get to the top status of Nebraska, Wisconsin (linewise). Wisconsin's line (as we learned this season) is larger than the GB Packers OL @ about 330 lbs average. As we saw during the Nebraska game their large OL dominated Iowa's small DL and Burkhead racked up 160 yards.

Fine when they used it on the opening and closing drives. Then they used KoK to call plays for the rest of the game rather than running it down their throats.

Who are some of the best DE's out there and what do they weigh? I think 270-280 is about the norm. Adrian 280ish, Allen 270. So by your logic, they must really not be that good, rather they are always going against smaller OT guys. But wait that cant be right because OT's and OG's are almost always 300-315 (atleast). Now your going to say see that proves my point OL needs to be bigger and I am going to say really does it, you are going to tell me a OT that weighs 280 instead of 310 is going to have a harder time defending/blocking a 270-280 pound DE? I would also argue that is exactly why Adrian and Allen can and do so well, is they are faster and they dont wear down as fast as a 310 pound OT. I know there is way more to it than that, I am just trying to point out that 10-15 pounds is not that big of deal. Now if our OL came in at 265-275 I would be worried, but 285-295 (and more) is not that big of deal when others are bringing 295-310 or so. Biggest thing when they are that size is muscle density. I would rather have a rock who weighed 290-295 than a tub who weighs 295-305. Why do you think boxing and wrestling weights are what they are? Like I said I dont think 15 pounds is a big deal as long as if you are going to be lighter, you have more muscle density.
