Cougill

I didn't want to chime in on this one, but I must and this will be the last time, hopefully, on any Cougill threads.
We must keep this in mind, Cougill left after he did some things to try and attain eligibility. He left the program, this is important to me.
Why leave? If he is serious about Iowa and playing for Iowa, why go to Kirkwood? The simple answer is playing ball is more important. It would have shown me a whole lot more about him if he had stayed and got his academics in order and stayed around the new coaches and players, no matter the situation. It was just easier to leave rather than tough it out and watch and attempt to work with the staff on how to get in better shape to play. With that in mind, I know not a lot of players will take that leap of faith and do that, but with the transformation that is going on at Iowa, I would have thought he would still want to be around it rather than be more concerned about playing. Cougill has some ability, there is no doubt, at one point he was considered at Top 100 player, but I think his conditioning hurt him, he is a lot like Derrick Nix at MSU, he is still grossly out of shape after losing 40 or more lbs. Each has talent, but can't show it at the Big Ten level from being lazy. If anyone saw Jared Sullinger his Jr. year of high school, he was about 300 lbs. look at him now and the type of player he has continued to become just by dedicating himself to a little fitness, complete makeover.
We will see what happens, I agree with one person, if he is back at Iowa this is a potential step backwards. Get a player that is a raw athlete, rather than Mr. Staypuff.
But, didn't a lot of players (Erik Hansen, Clinton Solomon, Shonn Greene, etc. to name a few) that had problems with grades go somewhere else to get everything back in order? Just curious.

Rare cases for kids to leave and then come back. I guess I think about Russ Millard, who stuck it out and look what type of player and person he became.

Don't know about Solomon, but did Greene leave because of academics, or a family situation?

Don't think I would ever catergorize "a lot" of players that leave any program and end up back at the original.

No, I just pointed out a few that did come back. I am sure that is a low percentage as you pointed out. I was just curious because it seemed like it was not necessarily the player's choice sometimes. I could be wrong. I know the 3 I mentioned left and came back, but I don't know the specific circumstances in each case.

I agree that Millard toughing it out was a good choice.

Both Solomon and Greene had academic issues. Solomon transferred to Iowa Central after his freshman year, played ball there for 1 year, got his grades in order and came back. Greene had academic issues after his sophomore year. Went to Kirkwood to get those squared away, then came back without losing any eligibility.

This. The guard trapped in a Panda's body is indeed a wasted scholly and a step backwards for the program. He does not fit what Fran wants to do and doesn't resemble anyone that he is going after. If Coug's ends up back at Iowa it's not a good sign.

With the way he left the program, I completely agree with you. But the way he could come back, he could be a completely different player/student. Either way, why would you not take him as a grey-teamer??? He could provide minutes in the right scenarios, when a big body is needed. Not to mention he would be great in practices.

I'm not for or against, BC has to prove something to me first. All I am saying is that I will take a wait and see approach. Players have their biggest jumps from freshman to sophmore seasons, the jury is still out on BC...

With every big man recruit that shuns Iowa (Katenda evidently being the latest) the chances improve that we will once again see Cougill in an Iowa uniform.

Neither do I, but right now he's looking like one of the few solid options that could somewhat benefit us down low next year. Even if it's for only a semester ;)

Hahaha good point. I'm hoping McCabe can put an end to the recent string of problems for Heelan boys. Wegher and Cougill.... ousted. If cougill is the best big Fran can find I will be disappointed in the staff's recruiting efforts. Tear my head off for this but he is just too big and slow to fit this system. I don't care if he is a big body, he has slow feet and clearly doesn't have what it takes in the classroom. Next...

I don't know about Cougil, but we don't need a center to lead the break downcourt!! That's what the other 4 players on the court are there for.
First two Iowa centers that come to mind for me are Lohous and Earl. Neither guy was gonna beat anybody down court but both were very successful playing our uptempo style.
