Cotton's emergence

Nice.

“He’s coming into practice, and he’s not letting a rep go to waste,” Davis said. “The guy really changed the way he’s living, changed the way he was practicing, and really competing. That builds up your confidence when you’re doing that, especially when you’re starting to catch the ball. His confidence is up through the roof now.”

^^^^^I think a few other players could benefit from this type of work-ethic.^^^^^^^

Those quotes were all attributable to Keenan Davis, not Greg Davis, right? Because that would change things. :)

Yes, those were all Keenan lol. I tried to make that clearer, but it got changed after I filed it.

Nice article. I'm glad he has taken over at 3rd WR and on KOR. I am happy to see Keenan no longer returning kicks, he wasn't great at it and I'd like him to focus on being a #1 WR.

When canzeri is healthy I would like to see him and bullock returning kicks as most of the successful kickoff returners are shorter, shiftier, faster running backs/receivers/d backs.

On a related note, what happened to Shumpert? The coaches and media were talking him up a lot coming out of camp. Is he still in the doghouse after that really bad drop in the ISU game? Looks like Cotton has taken some, if not all, of Shumpert's playing time and is taking advantage of the increased playing time.

I'd like to see Canzeri or even Bullock back on punt returns instead of Hyde. Hyde finally had a couple decent ones last weekend, but I think it's a matter of time before he turns it over.

As far as I have noticed, he has barely played WR since the drop. He was having a solid game before the drop, with four catches. He still plays on kick coverage.

Emerged is a fairly strong word for this position. I've always wondered why drops are never factored in to receiver statistics, except for the scout's analysis like HGF. Also, blocking sometime escapes our receivers.

I don't like to be real hard on the athletes, but the number of feel good stories, based on fluff amazes me.

Not to brag but I did point out before the season that he should be running back kicks with his speed.

Keenan had a huge block on one of Weisman's big runs in the 1st half. He is typically a very good downfield blocker.

Yeah, I don't get the "blocking sometime escapes our receivers" comment, either.

That is the ONE thing Soup has brought to the table more than anything else, downfield blocking by the receiving corps. DJK and McNutt both became excellent downfield blockers. Both KD and KMM have delivered some great blocks the past couple seasons.

I said sometimes, and my comments were more directed at the story, which is mostly fluff. I apologize, I could have worded this better. It's a good story, that's not my point, but it is a feel good story, and I'm fairly observant about all facets of the game, so I went off a bit. I just notice blocking and dropped passes, and before anointing someone as having emerged, would like to see these areas improve for Mr. Cotton.

Mr. Cotton is coming along nicely, but I wouldn't categorize him as having emerged quite yet. The receivers have some issues, including run blocking, that many times JVB gets the blame for.

I honestly agree that it's a little early to say Cotton has emerged. But we needed a second feature story for Monday's paper, and you're not going to get any kind of useful information asking questions about negative stuff after a game like that. Especially when you're a student reporter who's last on the totem pole in the room.

Get Goat to do a few submissions. He's dying to become a journalist.
