Cory Clark-v-Jack Hathaway--2nd Round Match Up?

Just saw the brackets for Iowa 3A 126lb. Assuming that Clark and Hathaway win the 1st round matches, they are slated to meet up in the 2nd round. Eric DeVos is on the other side of the bracket.

This happens every year in the state tournament. I think they really need to use a ranking system or else you always haev very good wrestlers in wrestlebacks far too early.

Agreed. There's no reason this should happen. It's not a surprise who the top wrestlers are based on state rankings.

I don't think it is that big of a deal. It sounds bad when you say 2nd round, but that round is also the quarterfinal round as well. If it wasn't this round they would just meet in the following round which is the semis.

This isn't the NCAA where you have to win 2 matches to get to the quarters.

Wouldn't this be a great match for the finals though? I mean come on the #1, #2, #4, #5 are all on the same side. Finals match will be good no matter what but still those two meeting in the qtrs/2nd rd is kinda bs. May the best wrestler that day win. im so pumped for state this year.

if clark finishes out this year with his 4th he will have earned it in one of the deepest brackets I can ever remember. the only reason I even say 'if' is because all the pressure is on clark. hathaway and devos will both have a shot at him as underdogs with more to gain than lose. good luck clark!

If they would have put Devos against Clark in the second round, people would have complained about that too. I don't think it matters to Clark at all.

they need to get rid of 7th-8th place thats my only gripe and of course rankings which is going to be hard

What they need to do is go way back to when there was only "One Class". I have always had trouble with, I'm the state champion at 106#, "NO", I am, "NO, I am. It's one of those days where I've got two monkeys and one banana.

I don't disagree with this but do think it is crazy the #1, #2, #4, and #5 are all on the same side of the bracket. Devos has to be one happy kid knowing that as the #3 seed he avoids Clark/Hathaway until the finals and the highest seeded wrestler he faces until the finals is seeded #6.

I completely disagree. there are 289 iowa schools that have wrestling. if you eliminate 2 classes it would severely hurt the sport. it cuts out 2/3rds of kids who walk around proud that they were a state qualifier, place winner, champ, etc. That would not help our sport grow. With less opportunity for success, less kids would wrestle in college, get into coaching, or pass on the sport in general. Imagine the state tournament w/ way less of all the small school kids there. I bet a lot of the 1a schools would even drop wrestling if that was the case. Iowa is great because it's a wrestling state. you don't try to change that.

I believe there was two less weights back then and the first round loser was done. No schools had to drop wrestling. As a matter of fact, schools in the North Central Conference always had their share of state champions or runnerups.:)

I agree with this.

The state of iowa has had multiple classes since 1956. That's a little outdated. Also, no wrestle backs for 1st round losers? who wouldn't hate that.

I graduated in 1968. There was two less weight classes then. State was divided up into AA and A. No one liked the idea of losing first round and going home. The IHSAA called it, "Motivation". I believe in 1969 or 1970 they went to AAA, AA, A. Oh, don't make fun of my age either.
