I kind of agree with the OP. It is a tough pass to defend but it's equally as tough to complete. Running the receiver so close to the sideline, with a catch in the corner, very tough. We have had luck with it this year and I think that is a testament to JVB and a very very good McNutter. Overall though, I think pass efficiency numbers would say this particular pass is not an efficient one. The back shoulder pass though, I do like that one a lot, almost impossible to defend. IMO a little easier to throw than the corner fade...IMO

When u have an athletic, tall receiver you run that play until the defense figures it out....which is not as easy as it looks. It's a great play call and not overrated IMO.

I think when you have a guy like Nutter it is a pattern that you CAN look to complete but Nutter is not the norm. Overall, if we had numbers at the completion percentage of corner fade routes I think it is lower than most other passes. Even with that said, we do have the bust-a-nutter so I do think we give this route its chances. Bust-a-nutter brings it down for us more often than not (again, not the norm though). IMO

The other thing that the threat of the outside fade does is open up space for the slant which McNutt is also very good at. The fade is great if you have the horses to do it. We now have the horses. The key is isolating the WR one on one.

I love when Iowa runs a trips set to one side with the TE, slot WR and then Davis or Marvin as the outside WR. Against the cover 2 looks most teams run, if either of the inside receivers run a route that the safety has to honor, it isolates Davis/McNutt one on one with the corner. It's almost a sure fire way of using a formation to dictate which WR gets isolated. A lot of times in the past we haven't had the WR's to win that battle much, but the past couple of years we have. Just my 2 cents.

The only time that I don't like this play is when it's 3rd and short when maybe a slant could have picked up the 1st down. I love the call on 1st/2nd down because you are taking the 50/50 shot and is a low risk play with the right personnel.
