Iowa freshman Connor McCaffery talks about his Hawkeye debut Friday and his decision to possibly not to red shirt this season:

From Connor and Fran's post game interviews it sounded to me like they wanted to pull the red shirt as long as Heller was on board with it. That's the impression I got anyway.

Sounded also like everyone was legit stunned at the CW news. That one surprised me...I assumed Fran kinda saw it coming or had some inside info. Guess not

I sort of liked having both CM and JBo on the floor together. That would allow JBo to get minutes at the 2, which is something I really advocate. CM has a good looking stroke that wasn't falling last night. Assuming that he is a good shooter and they will drop at an acceptable %, I like it. Just more flexibility.

There is no way Conner RS this year. He already looks way more advanced than Williams. My guess is he officially passed him as the Backup PG, and Williams decided it was time to move on. Just a guess, no inside info on this. Even after 1 exhibition game you could see Connor is just so much smoother and under control with the ball than Williams ever was, even after 2+ years on campus.

Seems like it's something Williams either did on the spur of the moment and or he knew he should transfer and just didn't want to face it. I mean you would have thought the best way to transfer would be before classes even started here and just begin with a fresh start at your new school,

Any number of things could have brought it on. Maybe he truly wanted to play this season, then realized his heart wasn't in it. Or a family situation that came up that hasn't come to light yet. Literally could be anything.

There's a lot of Koolaid being consumed on Connor and this team. I think Connor is a solid player but you can already see he is going to have issues keeping guys in front of him defensively. The defensive effort in general was marginal at best and we probably all overrated the hyperbole word of the century 'talent' on this team but it was a D2 team so I get it.

We really lack lateral quickness though and it's very evident. Just pray we have better rim protection. I am surprised also that we did not give Dailey a better look at PG but Fran must know something.

I agree @SpecialKHawk I think we are plagued defensively like we were last year. I just don't see perimeter defenders that are going to stop dribble penetration against B1G teams. I do think this year we have better defenders behind them with some rim protections, that should keep us from being as bad defensively as we were last year anyway.

Garza'a long arms contesting shots are worth a few more defensive stops on their own. Him going after rebounds like he does will limit at least a few more 2nd chance points per game. For the most part, we will have to outscore teams again, which is at least fun to watch.

I actually think Bohannon did a much better job of keeping guys in front of him last night than last year. A lot of the dribble penetration cane from our bigs trying to guard guys that were like 6’.

I agree with @SpecialKHawk though, I was a little confused at all the CMac hype I heard after this one. I thought he looked like he would struggle defensively and didn’t do a ton offensively.

Try not to look into whether the shots actually go in or not because that changes from day to day. Connor looked more confident shooting than Williams ever did, and his free throws looked good. Remember, he is a backup point guard and that is the one thing this team was missing. You have to compare him to other teams backup point guards and I would say he compares just fine. Unlike how Williams compared last year.

On the flip side, I don't get too excited that Nunge went 6 for 6 because he will obviously have off nights shooting. You're better off paying attention to the little things when judging a player in a game like this. The little things Nunge did excites the hell out of me.

My concern is defense primarily. But from everything I’ve gathered I wouldn’t expect Cmac to be much of a 3pt shooter this year, however maybe he is much improved. From a pure mechanics standpoint he has definitely improved.

I don’t know how we were statistically as a team last year in rebounding but I would think that would be one area we have to be improved with the length of Garza and Nunge.

By the looks of it the wingspan of Nunge >>> Garza's. I think Garza will struggle some this season as he adjusts. This level of competition is not PTL or European YMCA. It's bound to take some time and he's a below the rim player. That's hard when opponents are as big and quicker than you. That means he will need to learn to be crafty which takes time.

My assessment after one exhibition is we have some solid players and the young kids have some potential but we seriously lack upper end ability and athleticism. If we have to outscore teams without Jok.... yikes. We have too many of our best players at the same spots. Really going to be interesting to see what Fran does. I had expectations of making the tourney and finishing 4-5 in the B1G but not so sure now.

Jok wasn't all that efficient of a scorer so unless we get a bunch of shot clock violations, I'm sure we'll be fine on offense. It's not like he made 5 3s per game and shot 50%. He took a lot of shots that others will take now. Can they match his efficiency? Probably.

I really disagree about your take on Garza tho. He's relentless on the glass and efficient around the rim.

You are seriously discounting the attention Jok drew from opposing teams. He was the number target on everyone's scouting report. That emphasis is going to shift probably to a player like JBO. Life could be twice as difficult to get the same looks and how will he handle be 'mugged' on a continual basis. If he does what he did last year he will definitely be in consideration for all conference honors again.

Sure was. My bad. Still tho, his defense was bad enough that I still think Nunge, Garza, and Connor at least = Jok and Williams.

He's going to go through some struggles count on it. That also does not mean he will not be effective down the road. It's just going to be different for him when we start playing power 5/6 programs that have strong, fast, quick and/ or athletic bigs. Learning how to score below the rim against equal competition will take some time this year. These comments have nothing to do with effort given.
