Congratulations to Dan McCarney

Come on, guys... either you're just in the mood to give someone a hard time or you don't know the real value McCarney brought to the ISU athletic department.

Record aside, McCarney was an amazing presence in the ISU athletic department. I knew him very well as our car dealership was part of the coaches car program at ISU (as well as UI).

McCarney always had a smile, an enthusiastic handshake and a positive word for everyone he came in contact with. Other coaches within the department would call on Dan to speak to their teams. He simply made everyone better and was die hard cheerleader for everyone connected with the program, the athletic department and the entire ISU community. When he wasn't busy he didn't sit idly by taking time off. He would ask around to see if there was anything anyone wanted or needed him to do. He gave his time and effort willingly to anyone who wanted it.

If this guy never won a game he belongs in the ISU Hall of Fame.

But he did win a few. He is ISU's all time winning-est football coach. He led them to 5 bowls in 12 years. Big deal... but if you look at what he had to work with I think he did a stellar job. He actually brought hope to a program that hadn't had any for a long time.

That... and he's a Hawkeye... say nothing bad about this Hawkeye... he's a good one through and through. He deserves our respect and admiration.

Yeah, a good one. My cousin, a retired cop from Madison, could tell you stories to the contrary. This article really shows him to be a "good one":

Well, I intended a random snarky remark about the Cyclones. I had no idea we were going to dig up somebody's personal marital issues from 25 years ago. I'm not saying it has nothing to do with anything, but do we really want to go there.

It absolutely was not a one-time thing. And what made it to the media was... let's say tame.

It goes all the way back to Dan's time on the Iowa staff. The cops were repeatedly called to their place in Iowa City. Dan's ex-wife suddenly shut up when his attorney informed her that she could lose her large alimony checks if Dan lost his job at ISU.

While I admittedly do find the reference humorous, Jack Trice and how he died shouldn't be trivialized.

Yes, Targeting of a player for racial reasons and obvious medical neglect are obviously serious, and at one time all too common. Still there is a certain irony in the commemoration of that incident and the ongoing state of affairs with the team over the greater part of a century. There was an opportunity to improve Iowa State's record when the Big Twelve north was weak, and to his credit Dan McCarney took good advantage of that opportunity. The current competition presents an almost impossible situation for them though.
