We keep hearing that what you do in your conference doesn't matter to the selection committee. OK. Then why do winners of conf. tourneys get automatic bids? If it's about the whole body of work, then what logic is it that says winning 3 or 4 games in a conf. tourney trumps the previous 30 games?
There should be NO automatic bids. None. Win your conference? Cool. Win your conf. tourney? Great. But if you're 16-14 after winning your conf. tourney, you're still not getting in over a 21-10 team because it's about the whole body of work. Or is it?
You still want teams like Florida Gulf Coast in the NCAA? Fine. But don't make it automatic. Instead, make it fair. Judge all teams on the whole body of work, including how they do in their conf. tourney. But nothing is automatic.
