Comparing Withey and Woodbury

I think Woodbury can develop into the same type of player as Withey when it's all said and done. They are both very similar players.

Withey - 7'0' 235 lbs
Fr - 1.3 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 0.4 bpg
So - 2.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 0.7 bpg
Jr - 9.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.6 bpg
Sr - 13.6 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 4.0 bpg

Woodbury - 7'1 235
Fr - 4.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 0.7 bpg

Woodbury is getting a lot more time than Withey did his first two years at Kansas due to depth. This early experience should really help Woody. Withey also had to put a lot of time in the weight room when he came to Kansas and Woodbury needs to do the same.

You are right about Woody and weights. He doesn't look like he will ever be explosive. So he needs to develop more strength to get his shot off consistently.

Adam doesn't have the lateral quickness that Withey has. He will never be as good on defense

BUT

Adam can be a lot better scorer. Much better post moves as a young player

I think the big difference is coaching and practice. Withey had Danny Manning coaching him for the past couple years and was up against NBA-caliber big men in practice every day. Woodbury doesn't have either of those advantages.

I think he'll get better so I'm not discouraged now, but I am surprised that 27 games into the season, he hasn't developed any offensive game, at least 1 go to move. It might be that the team isn't getting him the ball early enough when he sets up. Putting on some muscle will help him.

I am sure Manning helps as a coach but he is 46 years old, I am sure Olaseni is no slouch to practice against. But I do wish Bowen was still around to help coach the big men.

He has a go-to move: left-handed hook shot crossing the lane. But he practices that on a 9' goal or something wrong, so he hits the front rim every time and never makes it. I think he could be very good for us someday.

I'm guessing he meant the Morris twins as NBA caliber guys to practice against. I might be wrong, but Woody only has Olaseni to go against, and Meyer. Woody will get better. He has to get stronger obviously but I think he needs to work on a jumper from the 10-15 feet range. That will really open things up for the offense and help open his post game. Right now his lefty hook is a work in progress, if he gets stronger it could be a deadly move.

Withey went against Cole Aldrich for a year, the Morris twins for two years, and Thomas Robinson for three years in practice. There might not be a big man in America in the past decade that has played against that many NBA-level 4s and 5s in practice during his college career.

That part will come, he made those all the time in high school. Defensively I think Woodbury has been better than I thought he would he needs to tweek his offensive game, practice that hook with someone in his face, and he would be pretty good. He also needs to learn how to use his height better, like stop bringing the ball down to where a guard can knock it out of his hands.

He is a true freshman, we had to expect some growing pains.

You should come watch my basketball league. You should watch the 60 yo's school good high school basketball players. I wouldn't discount Manning. Granted we play half court game, but almost always the old guys beat the young guys. The young guys don't block out well, don't see the court well, are not as physically strong, don't protect the ball, and don't move feet well.

It would be a huge advantage to play against Manning over someone who is developing.

Someday we might agree on something.

I have a feeling the level at Kansas is higher than your rec leauge high schoolers. If I had to put a kid up against Manning or a combo of Aldrich, Morris twins, and Robinson to help develop I think I'd take the latter combo. Not saying manning can't teach and help, but doubt he's able to replicate the toughness Withey would face in college.

Withey is an elite shot-blocker with an adequate offensive game, including a decent looking 15-footer. Woodbury might have an adequate offensive game one day, but will never be an elite shot-blocker or have a 15 foot jumper.

Yay, another Woodbury slam by Duff! Are there any Centers that Woodbury is better than or they all better athletically?

I'm sure there are, it's just that people keep comparing him to the best centers in college basketball.

The OP simply stated Woody could develop into that kind of player. By the time Woodbury is a senior he might develop into one of the best centers in college basketball. He is only a freshman!

Am I supposed to take your word for it that in 3 years he will not be able to develop the 15 ft jumper. I agree I don't think he'll be an elite shot blocker, but he is a good shot altererererer (sp?). I think he can develop the jumper if he works on it. I see no reason why he can't.

And I simply stated woody isn't as athletic and will not be is active defensively
