Comments from Barta and Brian Ferentz

Why didn't Brain said

It's not like it's the first time it happened?" I can read every freaking coach's lips in college football games, It's more common than you think. It's part of the game. They show it on T.V. and No way you can ever clean up the game of football. It's dirty and mudslinging sport. I know I was on football team.

Gary Barta: "We have completed the process and consider the incident resolved."

Unless there is some penalty associated with his outburst, just what price did he pay for his unprofessional conduct?

Brian Ferentz: " I have sent a letter of apology to the replay official and have assured our head coach and athletic director I will hold myself to a higher level of professionalism."

Again, just how significant and meaningful is this?

Unfortunately we are not privy to what was actually discussed and what will be done about it, but if there is nothing beyond what is stated above, there is no way this issue has been effectively resolved. The outburst was caused by much more than just the referees' calls in the first half of the Minnesota game; that just did not build up and boil over in one half of play.

I would certainly hope all three people involved dug much deeper into it than what this politically correct press release reveals. We'll have to watch closely to determine if we see any substantive changes coming from this incident. It could actually be a good thing for the staff and the team if it's used to open up the lines of communication, if not, it will only exacerbate any sub-surface problems.

He may want to continue his career on the sidelines so he can continue to do what comes naturally to him. Clamming up and being an altar boy doesn't seem to be his style.

Sub-surface problems? What? I hope there are no substantive changes (other than some newly designed run plays) that come out of this.

As a first offense, a formal reprimand and request for a statement seems entirely appropriate IMO, and is in accord with other fields of profession, such as medicine and business. Time to move on. Hopefully, this will be a good learning experience for Brian.

My premise is that Brian's outburst was only an outward manifestation of an underlying problem, one which has been bothering him for a while. I will not attempt to elaborate, most will already surmise what I am alluding to based on my prior comments.

All I will say is that I do not blame him for being frustrated, hopefully he and his HC will find more constructive ways in which these matters can be discussed and decided.

Couldn't have worded the above any better....those are my thoughts exactly. If it happens again, head coach's son or no, he'll be fired.

This week will be a true test on whether he learned or not. The lights will be bright against osu and I'm sure he'll have to face adversity.

I think officials on the field accept that coaches are going to get pissed off at them, and use salty language. Even then, I'm sure there is a line that can be crossed.

I don't think many replay officials expect coaches to abuse them. So if Brian cannot control himself in the pressbox, he should come down to the sideline where there is more slack.

But he has shown that he may have an issue regarding his emotions. I cringe when I see Fran throw/slam a chair, or go completely bonkers. I admire his passion, but again, there is a line. Fran seems to be better at controlling his rage since the chair.

Brian supposedly punched a hole in the wall (was this ever proven?), and now has verbally abused a replay official.

Hopefully he keeps his emotions in check going forward. Cause right now, this hiring your son as the OC without experience....isn't generating a lot of positives

If it has to do with him coaching under his dad, then he shouldn't have taken the job. He needs to be who he wants to be and let the chips fall where they may. I don't have a problem with him going off on a expletive tirade, but I do have a bit of a problem with him doing it to a Big 10 official in this particular context, on a call that they seem to have gotten right (or at least not obviously wrong). The first is a style thing (although knowing your audience helps), the second is just not being smart.
