Comcast is dropping BTN

Comcast Xfinity just dropped BTN in southern Arizona. Bastards. Bad, bad decision. A lot of Big Ten grads and alums live here. They’re going to hear about it. Probably lose customers to DISH or other providers.

Bad decision for Comcast...B10 Alumni like their BTN...not sure how this makes sense.
I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Unless you're an alumni of Michigan or Ohio State...there isn't much for you to watch on the BTN. The worm is turning and the BTN contract money is gonna fall. I hope the U of I has plenty of lube because all of Gutless Gary's blunders are really gonna hurt.

Con-Cast is the major cable supplier in the Chicago area....smack dab in the middle of B1G country.....sounds kinda stupid to me.

I was going to drop Medicom until they decided to add BTN.

I know you have a wood for Gary, but what does Gary have to do with if the BTN fails to generate the revenue that it did these past 12 years or so? Aren't all universities in the same boat regarding how well the BTN does?

We are gonna go full cut chord. YouTube TV and HuluLive both offer B1G and other sports options for $40 a month. We already have Netflix, and a smart TV. I think a decent HD antenna will get the locals. I think we can save $60 a month and not miss a thing.

Can't record though, correct?

Nothing. Gutless Gary's decisions are based on the "house" money that the BTN contracts provide vs long term sustainability. He's been able to marginalize the avg Iowa fan because he hasn't needed the money.
When you rely too heavily on the things you can't control and ignore the things you can....it's going to come back and bite you.
It's the biggest of many examples of Gutless Gary's incompetence.

Unless you have super slow internet there's no reason not to get rid of dish or cable. Sling and PSVue offer pretty much the same lineups as cable or dish for a third of the price, and no one gives a shit about locals anymore.

Give it 10 years and neither cable nor dish will exist anymore. Anything that hastens the process is fine by me.

I can speak for PS VUe, you don't need to record anything. You select the programming you want to watch and it doesn't store it on your device, but lets you go back and watch it for up to a month.

Since you're paying for PS Vue it's just like you're paying for the cable channels, so you can watch via mobile devices also. My kid plays youth football, and I watched the both ISU and NDSU in the car on the way to his games.

The only gripe I've had w PS Vue is that you can't set a timer to DVR past the end time of the game. It automatically goes 5 min then you have to find the show that's on after it. Is Sling TV different than that? I may try out Sling at the end of the month.

For Local channels just google OTA DVR and find the one you like best.

It is shocking to me how little coverage Nebraska and Iowa get on BTN. I know it is about TV sets, but Nebraska and Iowa fans are very loyal and I'm guessing watch BTN a lot. It is frustrating

I still have DTV because of their sports packages. Until theres another HD option for NFL sunday ticket I won't drop it. Doesn't mean I'm a fan of their service or prices though.

I agree that cable/satellite companies days are numbered. However I still think the streaming options have things to figure out

Yeah I guess if you’re a fan of an pro team that you can’t get it’s tough.

That’s one of the things I like about college ball, you can watch pretty much any game between the regular networks and the all the ESPN channels, especially with the Watch ESPN app on smart TVs, etc. Saturdays are a smorgasbord of college games. No blackouts.

This is true.

PSVue (through Roku) is clunky and slow to work through channel guide. No recall/return. No buttons for most watched channels like Directv had.

But for me — the price point per hours watched for live tv (sports) for Directv got to be ridiculous. My Wife can watch her HGTV type shows on any platform. She didn’t like how the psvue works but when I showed her a $100+ per month savings then it became very doable for her.

To drop Directv I had to “explain” why I wanted to drop service in order to find out how to get my money back. Then they offered a 33% reduced rate. I asked why I wasn’t getting the reduced rate anyway.

Directv: That rate is for new customers but since you have been with us for such a long time we can work with you to give you the introductory rates.

Me: will that be a permanent rate or just 12-24 months?

Yeah, right.

If it is more important and less expensive to keep customers then Barta isn’t the only executive working on the business model of squeezing blood from your current and long-term customer’s turnip. It’s happening all over.

I worked for On Media (Then TCI) in the nineties in Broadcasting/Sales and the thought was almost space age then about cable companies and phone companies someday combining to pool their services.

Now those days seem so antiquidated. And now cable companies and satellite companies may soon be obselite.

Wow! Can't wait to see what the next twenty years will bring. Hunger Games style holographs? Football games being projected on the siding of your house? Reflecting off the surface of a body of water? The sky? The Alliant Tower in Cedar Rapids? Who the hell knows!
