Column: How Will You Remember Nate Stanley?

People get all butt hurt if anyone says anything at all about Stanley that isn’t unicorn farts and ice cream sprinkles.

Folks need to understand that when people say he was a choke artist it isn’t saying he’s a bad dude or questioning his integrity. Nate has flopped in the biggest games that could have gained chances to be in contention for the division and conference titles. At the very best he’s been wildly inconsistent and he’s shown that when all the chips are on the table he gets shaken up. It doesn’t matter if he throws 300 TDs in his career if we lose to Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan every year, because those are the teams that have to be beaten to get to the next level. Some of that blame is a shared with Brian for sure, but we all know that when the heat is on we’ve seen time after time the passes going sailing into the void.

Like I just said, I have no doubt Nate is a good dude and a great teammate, and I see why his coaches and teammates love him. But he’ll never be remembered like Long, Tate, Stanzi, and Beathard. He just doesn’t have that piece of the pie. The last three years have been coulda shoulda woulda
Excellent post, and sums it up very well. Don't recall anyone on here saying he is a bad guy, or doesn't give it his all. People pushing that narrative are misguided. All anyone has to do is look at his record against decent teams, and that is what his legacy will be. Won games against average competition, but fell short in the big games. He had plenty of chances to change the narrative, but just couldn't quite get it done.

Very well said, this also comes to mind:

Pretty well summed up the fate of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin did it not?

I would actually narrow that down even further. At a very basic level, I think that Stanley always struggled with nervousness while under pressure. That one issue that was so tough to overcome is a type of performance anxiety issue. In the simplest terms, how does one react under extreme pressure when the adrenaline hits. Athletes try to train out the nervous energy they get from their nervous system when the body reacts under performance pressure. The job of quarterback requires quick mental processing, refined control over throwing motion and body position and pocket awareness, all within the space of a few seconds. It's a rare sort of person who can filter all that feedback and also have very refined control over their body while doing it. Stanley frequently had issues with his mechanics getting a bit off under pressure. Unfortunately the higher the steaks the more it can be an issue.

Good Hawkeye, great dude. Crazy arm talent at times.

Made some unreal throws, missed some as well. I had plenty of moments of frustration with some missed throws and some happy feet. That said the kids wasn't by himself out there, oline misses(notably vs MI and PSU) and key drops are part of the equation. Qb1, fair or not, takes the brunt of the blame, just part of the deal.

Maybe not on the Mt Rushmore of Iowa qbs, but all in all, he represented well.

A couple games left, hoping he goes out strong.

There are people who turtle under pressure, and those who thrive under it and rise up.

Tate and Beathard rose to a whole other level under the heat and they won games that should have been lost because they hit an extra gear; they almost seemed to prefer playing under pressure. Ice in their veins.

Nate is the opposite. Not only does he not handle the stress, it adversely affects him. That’s in my opinion a genetic thing that you either have or you don’t. Not necessarily his fault.

For the record, if I were CJ out there trying to hold an undefeated regular season together with that offensive line and WR corps I would be shitting my drawers on national tv. But I also realize that’s one of many reasons I shouldn’t be a quarterback for a college football team.

I wish Nate had the moxy to be a big game QB, but he just doesn’t.

Jeff George and Jay Cutler come to mind. They had bazooka arms, could make every throw on the field, had decade plus NFL careers, and managed to win two postseason games between the two of them. George clashed with coaches and management and bounced from team to team, eventually running out of teams that would put up with him.

Cutler, playing just a decade and al half later but in an entirely different era was too expensive to ship out but was like root canal for teammates and offensive coordinators. He too finally wore out his welcome while less hyped QB's like Drew Brees had super bowl rings and we're still winning playoff games. Because Brees had moxie, and an it factor.

I would say it is a fundamental issue. I'm not so sure I say it boils down to a simple "it" factor. The human body is a complicated thing. The mind even more complicated.

Part of the frustration is Stanley isn't one of those guys who makes a lot of huge mistakes either. He was rarely throwing a lot of interceptions, turning the ball over, or totally screwing up plays. His timing and accuracy would frequently be off though. Throwing the ball too long in this game. Throwing balls short or behind people in other games. Of course the pass blocking this year wasn't helping, but he would be a bit off even when he got time.

I will remember every columnist and color commentator comparing him to the exact same pro quarterback every single year that he has been here.

And to that I"ll say that Stanley is/was the perfect Ferentz quarterback. Don't make a lot of mistakes or turnovers, and be an absolute world-beater in one game but fold like a lawn chair the next. I don't know if he'd have fared better in another system with a real offensive guru like Mike Leach or he'd have the same result and be good but not great. He's escaped the injury bug and was a solid, steady performer. But for anyone who was wanting that generational player who can carry a team to a title that's not him. He's got the physical tools and may get a look in the pros but who knows? Thanks for being a Hawk, Nate. Best of fortune beyond Iowa City.

Nate came I as the right guy at the right time for Iowa. Who could of predicted he would have an average o-line for the past two years. Nate spend a lot of time either running for his life or on his back. Yet he bounces back every week. If Iowa wasn’t such a conservative play calling team, I think he would of surpassed all of Chuck Long’s record with a more aggressive passing attack.

Agree. But H/C Aura is Like Warm Beer..UGH.And like you say! It Gets Worse.Nate Does His Best. And CJ. and Stanzi Handled it Differently. Gets Harder for Us Fans. Extra Win,Like 'free beer tomorrow! "Hope" is Thirsty.

Respectable quarterback that gave his best. Better blocking and coaching might have helped. Glad he got a win and 300 yards in his last home game. Now if he can just beat the Huskers one more time.

From a literary standpoint Nate was the Iowa QB reminiscent of "Jekyll and Hyde". From game to game, play to play or half to half I never knew which Nate Stanley was going to perform. From an overall performance perspective he never quarterbacked an Iowa team with a losing record which is a big positive for me. There are so many parts to offense that depend on the QB to execute in order to do well. In physical qualities Nate has them but when it came to using them it was a crap shoot.

But on a more personal level what Nate has done off the field is really how I will remember him. My 11 year old grandson was diagnosed with stomach cancer. During his treatment Nate and some other members of the football team visited with my grandson and presented him with an autographed football. It really lifted his and our spirits at a troubling time. I'll choose to remember Nate for all the compassion he showed on and off the football field.

October, 2020. Iowa vs (fill in the opponent). Payton Mansell and Spencer Petras combine to throw five picks as Iowa loses 42-38.

Comments on these boards

"Stanley would have taken care of the ball often enough for us to win this game".

"We miss a calming veteran presence in the huddle to settle things down, like Stanley."

"Stanley could hit that deep out pattern like a dart thrower. We sorely miss that in this offense."

"Mansell couldn't break a pane of glass with his arm"

"We sorely need a quarterback who can convert the short yardage sneak."

"Maybe Padilla should be the man". Or Deuce Hogan"

Exactly!

Are you old enough that you’ve hit the level where it doesn’t matter what you do to your liver? Like how if someone’s 85 years old it doesn’t mean squat if they smoke cigarettes because they’re about to go tits up anyway?

If not, I hope you realize that getting annihilated every day by 8AM isn’t going to earn you more time with your grandkids. I mean I totally understand gettin shitty once in a while and solving the world’s problems with your buds, but Jesus Christ.

For F’s sake man, have some personal pride in yourself. Every single time you post it’s 9:30 in the morning and you can’t even speak English by that point.

Long ago I thought it was just the same kind of mental disabilities @atomicblue224 has, but then you started saying how you were slamming Rolling Rock at Dave’s place every morning. Get a fucking hold of yourself man and get some rehab. How do you think your kids would feel about their old man getting piss drunk online and embarrassing himself trying to speak Mandarin to people who make fun of him?

Pull your ass together Earl.

Yeah, you did get the Roethlisberger comparison a lot. Be prepared for more of the same come February and March.

What the F? You talking about? You mad, bro that I painted your car like this!

Well, let's see

  • Damone scalped tickets for a living
  • He was a sports bookie who would remind customers of the point spread after he took the bet
  • He banged, and knocked up, his best friend's girl
  • He suggested an abortion, then tried to justify it with a cavalier attitude towards abortion
  • He agrees to pay half and give Stacy a ride to the clinic, then does neither.
Yes i think that would qualify someone as a prick.

The question of why someone as self described cool as Damone is driving a Gremlin has never been answered. You would thing a sports bookie and ticket scalper would at be able to afford at least a Chevy Citation or Ford Escort.

Also, Kashmir is not on Led Zeppelin IV, nor is that album called LZ IV. It was off of Physical Graffiti.
