Column: How Will You Remember Nate Stanley?

I think most fans recognize Nate is a class act and represented his team in wonderful fashion . I will remember him as a guy who had a big arm and could really make some tough throws. The throw today after escaping a sack and hitting Smith Marsette was a thing of beauty. I will also remember the beatdown he helped lay on Ohio State. That was pretty cool. On the other hand, I will also remember Nate as guy who missed a lot of wide open receivers all over the field and lacked consistency from week to week.

October, 2020. Iowa vs (fill in the opponent). Payton Mansell and Spencer Petras combine to throw five picks as Iowa loses 42-38.

Comments on these boards

"Stanley would have taken care of the ball often enough for us to win this game".

"We miss a calming veteran presence in the huddle to settle things down, like Stanley."

"Stanley could hit that deep out pattern like a dart thrower. We sorely miss that in this offense."

"Mansell couldn't break a pane of glass with his arm"

"We sorely need a quarterback who can convert the short yardage sneak."

"Maybe Padilla should be the man". Or Deuce Hogan"

If Mansell and Petras are still sharing snaps in October, they deserve what they get. Pick a QB and go with it. Unlike the way we're handling the RB pool, where everyone is sharing plays like it's a U12 flag football team.

I should have put a disclaimer on my post.

Kirk is usually pretty good at sticking to one QB. The only times I remember him being a little wishy washy were 2001 (McCann and Banks) and early 2008 (Stanzi and Christensen)

Of course people were screaming for Beathard over Rudock in 2014, especially when he filled in at Pitt and Purdue and won both starts. But Kirk was sticking with Jake.

Ironically, for as much as a QB guru as Hayden Fry was, he frequently had a more difficult time settling on one. There was 1982 (Grogan and Long) 1986 (Poholsky, Hartlieb and McGwire after Vlasic missed much of the season) 1987 (same three QB's) a hot mess from 1992-1994 that was too much of a web to untangle and 1997 after Sherman went down (McCann, Mullen and others)

But no question his heart and he is a Hawkeye.

People get all butt hurt if anyone says anything at all about Stanley that isn’t unicorn farts and ice cream sprinkles.

Folks need to understand that when people say he was a choke artist it isn’t saying he’s a bad dude or questioning his integrity. Nate has flopped in the biggest games that could have gained chances to be in contention for the division and conference titles. At the very best he’s been wildly inconsistent and he’s shown that when all the chips are on the table he gets shaken up. It doesn’t matter if he throws 300 TDs in his career if we lose to Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan every year, because those are the teams that have to be beaten to get to the next level. Some of that blame is a shared with Brian for sure, but we all know that when the heat is on we’ve seen time after time the passes going sailing into the void.

Like I just said, I have no doubt Nate is a good dude and a great teammate, and I see why his coaches and teammates love him. But he’ll never be remembered like Long, Tate, Stanzi, and Beathard. He just doesn’t have that piece of the pie. The last three years have been coulda shoulda woulda

Very well said, this also comes to mind:

Nate is a great hawk player and an above avg QB. In baseball they talk about 5 star players and one of those stars is speed. Nate doesnt bring a lot of speed and escape-ability to the QB position in a day and age when most coaches go for it and use it. But Nate is a gamer, tough, he makes a lot of really good and great throws but then turns around and misses some easier ones which seems like they would be easier ones. That is what I will remember him for and not winning a lot of the big games.

The game against Ohio St will be a treasure for all of us to watch for years to come (and Nate was a big part of that win). No question, we will always remember Nate and that game. It is a shame, because after seeing that performance, in that game, you would have thought this could have been a Heisman Candidate at some point.

If only his skill set matched his heart week to week.

Well you'll never see 2 Iowa qbs on the field in the same game unless 1 gets hurt, so the rest is moot. Spencer Petras will be just fine, and no one will be complaining about his accuracy or arm strength.

I probably should have added that Nate has been working with a subpar rushing game the last two seasons that many of his predecessors did not. In a pro-style offense, it makes his job a lot harder. The rushing attack today was brutal.
Part of the problem with the rushing attack is that nobody is afraid of Nate, or our receivers beating them over the top consistently. Sure once in a while they completed a pass over the top, but nothing consistently enough to get teams to back off the line of scrimmage. Obviously the line was not good this year, and combine that with the fact it took 9 games to figure out Goodson is our best back, and you see the rushing attack we have.

He saved his worst games for the biggest spots. I’ll remember him as the guy who cost us two West title because he can’t put any touch on passes to wide open receivers.

I conceeded that over an hour ago.

I also pointed out in that post that Hayden was actually a lot more wishy washy with QB's than Kirk is.

I agree with what your saying, but play along and have some fun with it.

Meanwhile, I'm watching Eno Benjamin and ASU in a fight to become bowl eligible against Oregon.

He may not get his bowl but he will always have those palm trees, suntanned coeds, and whatever, ahem, fringe benefits that were thrown his way for flipping to ASU.

Stanley completed 8 passes of 20 or more yards today.

Goodson rushed 21 times for 38 yards.
