Weekly Top 25

If I had a vote in the AP Poll this would be my ballot based on how good I think the teams are right now.

1. Ohio State (2-0)…So far Buckeyes look like most complete team in the country, but they’ve yet to play their first tough road game.

2. Alabama (2-0)…Is Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram about to get the Wally Pipp treatment from fill-in Trent Richardson?

3. Boise State (1-0)…FCS James Madison beat two teams on Saturday, because with its upset of Virginia Tech the Broncos’ BCS title hopes take a hit.

4. Oregon (2-0)…I know Tennessee is rebuilding, but to go on the road to Knoxville in those conditions and blow the Vols out is impressive.

5. TCU (2-0)…Horned Frogs figure to be favored in each of their games the rest of the way, but still probably have no shot at BCS title game.

6. Oklahoma (2-0)…Bob Stoops has lost just two home games in his career, and the Sooners own the nation’s longest home winning streak after rout of Florida State.

7. Iowa (2-0)…It looked like the JV vs. varsity against in-state rival Iowa State, now a tough road trip to Tucson looms.

8. South Carolina (2-0)…So far Gamecocks haven’t let NCAA distractions get to them, and freshman tailback Marcus Lattimore is a revelation.

9. Texas (2-0)…Still waiting for the Longhorns offense to get going, but freshman receiver Mike Davis had a breakout game.

10. Florida (2-0)…Second half surge carried Gators past South Florida, but they clearly still need to improve offensively.

11. Wisconsin (2-0)…Badgers put forth very pedestrian effort against San Jose State, one of the worst FBS teams in the nation.

12. Nebraska (2-0)…Taylor Martinez continues to impress at quarterback for the Huskers, but a tough road trip to Washington looms.

13. Utah (2-0)…Utes don’t face an opponent with a pulse until October 9th.

14. Michigan (2-0)…Wolverines are likely looking at another 4-0 start, but will they repeat last year’s second half collapse as well?

15. Miami, Fla. (1-1)…Jacory Harris’ inability to protect the football was again on full display in Columbus last week.

16. Oregon State (0-1)…Primary objective this week is to develop some consistency and confidence for new quarterback Ryan Katz.

17. Arizona (2-0)…Wildcats will be tested physically by experienced Hawkeyes, but their passing game will also test Iowa.

18. LSU (2-0)…This time Tigers finished strong in the second half against Vanderbilt in their SEC opener, but schedule gets tougher next four weeks.

19. Auburn (2-0)…Got a sneaky good road win at Mississippi State on Thursday night, especially coming off quick turnaround.

20. North Carolina (0-1)…Will the Tar Heels get most if not all their talented but suspended players back.

21. Arkansas (2-0)…Sluggish effort against undermanned Louisiana-Monroe indicates Razorbacks were clearly looking ahead to next two games.

22. West Virginia (2-0)…Showed some real heart coming back like that in the fourth quarter on the road against an instate rival.

23. Texas A&M (1-0)…So far a defense that has struggled the past several years is giving up less than 270 yards per game.

24. Stanford (2-0)…Got a rare win at the Rose Bowl in impressive fashion and have outscored first two opponents 87-17.

25. California (2-0)…Bears put up 52 points on California with only 356 total yards because they were plus-5 in turnovers.

Honorable Mention:
26. Houston (2-0), 27. Air Force (2-0), 28. Notre Dame (1-1), 29. Missouri (2-0), 30. Texas Tech (2-0).

Cheers & Jeers

Cheers to…Michigan’s Denard Robinson, who might have put together the best two first career starts in a career by a quarterback in the history of college football.

Jeers to…Boise State, which may have seen its national championship hopes come to an end because of the outcome of a game they didn’t even play in.

Cheers to…Speaking of which, James Madison may be the first FCS team to beat two FBS teams on the same day when they won at Virginia Tech and then dealt a serious blow to Boise State’s fortunes on the same day.

Jeers to…UCLA, which continues to struggle to find itself under the tutelage of alumnus Rick Neuheisel. It’s only two weeks into the season, but the 0-2 Bruins are 115th nationally in passing, 115th overall in scoring, and 102nd overall in scoring defense.

Cheers to…Turner Gill, who was already fired in the minds of many Kansas fans after an ugly 6-3 loss to FCS North Dakota State at home in his debut last week. However, he made a change at quarterback and his defensive coaches got the Jayhawks ready for Georgia Tech’s triple-option attack to pull off the upset. Kansas wins this week’s Bon Scott Award of testicular fortitude.

Jeers to…Howard Schnellenberger, who inexplicably elected to kick a field goal down 30-14 from inside his opponent’s 10-yard line with only about five minutes to go, when a touchdown and a two-point conversion would’ve made it a one possession game. Perhaps the 76-year old Schnellenberger was suffering from a senior moment.

Big Ones
A look at the top five games this week in college football.

Iowa at Arizona…Last time the Hawkeyes ventured west to the valley of the sun for a 10:30 EST kickoff against an experienced quarterback was in 2004, and they suffered one of the most embarrassing losses of the Kirk Ferentz era.

Clemson at Auburn…Battle of Tiger teams with second year coaches and playmaking quarterbacks.

Notre Dame at Michigan State…Brian Kelly’s first chance to show Sparty they made a mistake not hiring him three years ago.

Nebraska at Washington…A chance for Jake Locker to prove he’s worthy of being the next No.1 pick in the NFL draft against the black shirt defense.

Texas at Texas Tech…Last time Longhorns ventured to Lubbock it cost them a shot at the national championship.

I'm not sold on Michigan at all, but I understand a fan rating them so high.

If Iowa defeats Arizona, they really should be ranked in the top 5.

Keep in mind that his poll is based on how they looked so far this season, and more specifically this last Saturday. It's not a reflection of how he thinks they will finish the season. It's a power poll more than anything.

I think this is a very fair assessment thus far. The Big Ten is looking pretty good thus far.

So you rank a 0-1 team and a 1-1 team in the top 16???

Pretty fair poll. Oregon State @ 16: got beat by a pretty good TCU team but gave them all they wanted. I would say that is fair. Might be a different story when/if they beat Boise State. Miami kept themselves in the game despite turning it over every other possesion, that is worth a yo. They look like the class of the ACC for sure. Denard Robinson is looking like a Heisman canidate, so they deserve to be ranked. The defense can't be that bad, UConn put up a 60 spot this weekend I think. Notre Dame is looking like a top 25 team, able to hang with Michigan with a walk-on running the team for a bit. South Carolina is a little high, think the Razorbacks and Stanford deserve some love.

Come on Deace. I am a huge Michigan fan but with that secondary with Carvin Johnson questionable for perhaps the rest of the year, how can you have them at 14? Denard won't win 9 games without the secondary improving. It could happen but it hasn't yet. DR will look like a sophomore in at least 2 games this year.

True and if he keeps running 25 times a game hes gona get hurt.

But Michigan has good QB depth

Absolutely insane placement of Michigan. I'd like a legit explanation for why a team with such a crappy defense deserves to be ranked so high. The issue here is this ... there isn't one!

Poll doesn't look to bad to me but, and I'm nit picking here, Tucson is not considered the "Valley of the Sun" that would be the Phoenix metro area.

While true that Iowa didn't fare so well last time they traveled out west to face an experienced QB, we had a true sophomore QB making his first road start, with a running game that, well, never got going all year. Stanzi has been around more than a few times in his career, and our running game looks pretty good at this point. This defense is also better than the 2004 squad.

Not to mention, Ferentz never makes the same mistake twice. They will be much better prepared for the late start, temps, etc.
