Ok - you guys are a lot smarter then me - but why does Ramos & then Telford choose down when everyone knows it plays to their opponents strength? Help me out - please!

Let me add Evans to this list

It didn't cost Evans the title. It was the most beneficial for him. He was up by one and if he escapes he's up by two and still gets the opportunity to take him down again. If Perry does take him down after he gets out it's tied and he has the opportunity to get an escape for the win. Everyone on earth knows that Perry can't turn a guy to save his life. Also, nobody thought that Perry would be able to stall for 2 minutes and then put a choke hold on Evans and get away with it.

Agree with the hold comment. Perry did have an arm while riding, but his hold was getting pretty high (up to Evans' throat). To me that's crossing the line between a tough ride and being dirty.

I'm not in the business of questioning a man as credentialed as Tom Brands, but I couldn't help but think that Evans should have cut Perry right away in the 2nd round of OT, to maximize the time he needed to score a takedown. Odds were he wasn't going to ride out Perry (and he didn't) and by trying to ride him out first, he didn't leave himself much time to score after Perry escaped. Evans was getting in on his shots so I thought cutting him and having 30 seconds to score a takedown seemed like the best strategy.

If Iowa wrestlers would learn to stall as well as other wrestlers they would win a lot more matches. They're just not as adept at it as others.

I disagree with picking down, although I see the argument. I just think it was very unlikely that Evans would get out. Perry may be the best top wrester (err.. best top staller) in the tourney. And I think forcing Perry to be the aggressor on their feet would have put Perry in a position that isn't his strength.

Neutral wrestling: Evans > Perry
Mat wrestling: Perry >>>> Evans

Evans needed to make it a neutral match, imo. But what's done is done. It played out the way it did and there's no going back.

So glad Tony pulled out the win so there was something good to focus on in this tourney.
