Coaching styles

I have always been of the mind set of explaining to people, that if a man believes in himself, there is nothing he cant do. We went to the moon, we split atoms, we just put a suv on mars and so on. The list goes on and on.
Then I ask them if they believe in themselves? If they say yes, I say I believe in you as well. Some people take way more work to believe in then others, but with enough work anyone can become something that surpasses everyones expectations. So now that you believe in yourself and really that is all you ever needed, what happens when I believe you and your teammates believe in you as well? Should not anything be possible?
I guess it all comes down to whether you think you can, or think you cant, your right.
Now why this boring post? Because I think what we are seeing is a team that is starting to believe. Coaches believing in the players and other coaches, players believing in themselves, the coaches and each other. If we can go and get a win at MSU, all of you will start to believe as well. Belief is a powerful thing when it comes to mankind.
Hardest thing about teaching anything to people is to get them to stop saying they cant and start saying they can. Once they believe they can, the teaching becomes easier and the growth accelerates 10 fold, if not more.
So for the next few weeks can you believe in this team? If they win at MSU, you can claim, you knew the whole time. If they lose, you can claim you did your part as a good fan and supported your favorite team the best you could.

Gordon Bombay? Is it you?

FUNNY. I had to google it, why you watching a kids show? Sounds simple I know. But it is true. Anyone who has ever taught a kid to ride a bike knows this. The kid says he cant, the parent says he can. Once the kid goes a little ways before wiping out, they start to think they can. Not long after they do. Adults are no different. Anything from school, to work, to sports. I am telling you, belief is a very powerful thing.

I agree with you. Believing in yourself and in what you do will have an impact on the final product. It's hard to have faith in your teammates if you don't believe in yourself.

What does this coaching style suggest?

I turned 21 and I was ready take on the world, there was nothing I couldn't do.
Then I turned 30. I was still pretty sure I would make it.
Then came 40. Hmmmm.......taking longer than I thought.
Now almost 49. Sigh......probably not happening.
Now living through my children.

Exactly. That is why some people are told they will never walk again and dont, and some are told the same thing and do. That is just them believing in themselves. Now add in if you have 10, 20 or 30 more people believing in you. Most of these kids got this far because their parents, grandparents and sometimes a whole community believed in them. I think if this team believes in themselves and each other, the B10 had better watch out. Belief and accountability!

You know, I dont see it that way. I see it as some of us were put here to make those around us better. My wife always asks why I dont take care of myself (go back to school or other wise find ways to make myself better (money)), I tell her, that is not my job. My job is to make her, our daughter and anyone else I can better. I really think this is how it works. My grandpa, then my mother and now me. Some people just enjoy helping others to be all they can and it is not about money or sometimes even a thank you, it is about you yourself knowing what you have done. It is a choice and a lifestyle and nothing makes me happier.

I believe we're an extremely average team this year.

Fair enough. I believe, we are a young team and thus need to work harder then some other teams. I believe the whole B10 is down. I believe there is not a better program out there at taking "extremely average teams" and making noise with them. I believe we are not out of this yet, because I believe we will get better each and every week. I believe the players and the coaches have had their heads in the right place this year. One game at a time!

This makes sense to me. Kirk obviously believes in himself and his football philosophy. Iowa coaches have always made emphasis on teaching skills and not publicly criticizing individual players. He is who he is.

Posters are now calling Minn a weak team but many of them were worried up until Saturday afternoon. I am going to think positive and I feel this bye week and the time for teaching will be very beneficial to IOwa. MSU will be a big challenge and I look forward to a very competitive game.

I agree. This was not a dig at our staff or beating MN. I have just seen a lot of different ways of coaching showing up this week in college ball. I was refelecting on what worked best for me, both being taught and trying to help others. I dont know how many times KF has said RM is a "builder" style coach and I cant imagine doing it any different. So I suspect that KF likes that style as well.
Some are more like the military and feel like they have to tear you down before building you back up. Some like to just "push buttons" that are not even there. They are like Hellen Keller picking keno numbers.
