coaches poll 12/21

I'm really curious how Iowa can win three national championships in a row yet be ranked #6, regardless of the turnover on the roster.

I know we all scoff at the football rankings and how teams are ranked based on history, but we don't get three-time defending champions in college football, either.

Do you know how tournaments and duals are scored? You can look at head to head matchups in dual meets and predict who will win in wrestling a lot easier than you can football.

Tournament scoring is real easy. Take where each guy is ranked right now and plug in the amount of points that place would score (minus bonus points) at nationals.

Turnover in wrestling is a great equalizer. Unless you think a wrestler who has seen little competition should be ranked ahead of returning AA's without proving anything first is the way to go, ranking Iowa higher than they are-based on history- is not a solid argument.

Rankings are strictly oppinions mixed with head-to-head results. That said I think the Hawks ARE getting credit for last years championship. They lost 8 absolute studs the equivalent of a football team losing every starter except a QB,the Punter, and Long Snapper. and yet they're still ranked number six in the nation. It is because of their 3 titles in a row, reputation, hype surrounding first time starters, and head coach. And that is all you could hope for at this point in the season with an unproven team.

All of that said, I believe this coming week (Midlands) is going to be the tournament that everyone points to in March and says "That was the coming-out party".

I don't think being rated six means that they're getting recognition from last year. Being ranked six is about the same as being rated in the 20s in football and basketball. I think they are ranked right around where they will end up in March. This is based on the line up as is right now. I'm looking for 157 and 184 to be disappointments and 133, 141, 197 to surprise us. I'm putting 133 in that group based on Ramos getting the nod not Moore, who most people expects to do big things. Can't wait to see how we do at Midlands; then we can better gauge how good our team is.

Does anyone else feel that Midlands/Southern Scuffle hurts the sport like Drake/Penn relays hurts track? Why do you put those meets on the same day when you can split them and get all schools both times? Just think about the possibility of expanding wrestling down south by having the Hawks and all their fans visit.

Interested on why you think 157 and 184 disappointment.

Just based on what I've seen so far this season. Even though there's been very few matches this year, I think a lot of people had these two weights being high AA and even competing for a NC. Gambral doesn't go to his offense and St John seems to shut down when things aren't going right. These are just my observations so far, I reserve to adjust my predictions after next weekend.

Also I wouldn't get too upset over my predictions, being I haven't been doing so good at them this year.

Not upset at all just wanted to hear the opinion. It is fair based on results so far. My only contention would be based on other matches I have seen so far (which is few) not many guys elsewhere look much more advanced than DSJ or GG
