Clothes Call: Ranking B1G football helmets - BTN

Yup, our helmet works, plus we've kept the same design for 3 decades, during which we've had some decent success. I'd go with Michigan as #1.

Another reason why the big 10 is such a sweet league: uniforms and helmets.

I like Iowa at 4, however one does 1-3, I can't imagine Iowa being any higher than where they are. Michigan and PSU are great, with Nebraska right behind. I've never loved OSUs helmet, never been a fan of pride stickers because it reminds me if high school. But the way their pride stickers are the helmet, so to speak, is cool.

Two more things, i think purdue's helmet is great and should be slightly higher.

And, the guy claims that program winning is not a factor, which is not true. I see what he means, but it's impossible to actually achieve that.

I really don't get what it is about Michigan's helmets that people think are so cool. It's OK, but not really a head-turner.

They are iconic for what they've been for 80 years. If they never existed and Bowling Green suddenly adopted them, they'd be ugly.

I'm another who doesn't get the love-fest for Michigan's helmets. Iowa could have yellow helmets with black polka-dots, and keep that design for 80 years, but does that make them great just because they've been around for so long? I would say NO.

I will at least say that Michigan's helmets are easily recognizable. I'll give them that. I don't dislike them though.

And for PSU, it's just basically a plain white helmet with a blue stripe on it. Nothing wrong with it, but again, I don't get the love fest. Iowa's helmet is pretty much exactly like PSU's except for gold & black, plus the tigerhawk. IMO, Iowa's helmets > PSU's helmets, and I can say that without bias. What do PSU's helmets have that Iowa's does not, except for that PSU has more football tradition?

More tradition. Also the mystique of "penn state", which is now ruined. I completely agree, although I'm more of a fan of their helmet than you are. This is why its stupid to say the rankings are 'made on fashion alone, purely looks'. If Michigan football was last in all time wins, not first, how cool would their helmet be? PSU might be an even better example of this. It's just a white helmet, pretty much straight out of the box, yet people think its the best looking helmet around.

I think the argument would be that an ugly helmet doesn't last 80 years. It has lasted 80 years because of tradition and because it is a good design. The best? No. But worthy of being kept.

Yes, I agree that if Michigan was a bad program, people wouldn't think their helmets were so great. Ditto for PSU (or Alabama - just a crimson helmet with a small number on the side). Or on the flip side, if Iowa had Ohio State's tradition, our helmets would be at the top of a lot of people's lists. Funny how that works. Silly, but true.

Penn State and Ohio State have boring, high-school caliber helmets that suck.

Michigan and Iowa have distinction.
