Class of 2009 players would be 5th yr Seniors if they redshirted.

If you are not a blue blood program that can rely on reloading with a roster full 4 and 5-star players, you really count on unheralded guys contributing their 3rd yr on campus and making an impact their 4th/5th yr. Guys like Rob Bruggeman who only started 1 season but played at a very high level.

Here are player from the 2009 class with Scout ranking and Scout position (although many were recruited for a diff position like Hyde).

Class of 2009:

Dominic Alvis - NR - DE gray shirt that earned scholy
Stephane Ngoumou - 2star WR-never arrived
Nolan MacMillan - 3star OT- Lots of offers including MSU, GT, L'ville. Listed on last 2-deep roster from July as backup LT
Micah Hyde - 2star QB- Offers from Cincy and MAC. Did not RS. All B1G performer in NFL now impressing at camp.
Connor Boffeli - 2star TE- ISU offered. Listed as starting LG after starting final 3 games last yr
Dakota Getz - 2star TE- had to leave team last fall due to continued injuries
Matt Murphy - 2star OT- left for NIACC and currently at MN St-Mankato
Josh Brown - 2star WR - Offers L'ville, IU, WF, So.FL. left after FR yr to be closer to home and went to Murray St
Marty Hopkins - 2star MLB - Gave up FB for school
Shane Dibona - 2star RB - injuries forced him to quit last yr
Tyler Harrell - 2star DE offers from Cincy and MAC- never made it and went to Louisville
Anthony Schiavone - 2star TE offers from Buffalo and Temple- left after 1st semester at Iowa.
Scott Covert - 2star DE offer by Pitt - switched to FB then left school after 2 yrs.
Brett Van Slotten - 2star OT- listed as starting OT. Saw action as RS FR, much more as So, and started all 12 games last year.
Brandon Wegher - 4star RB with lots of offers inclu Auburn, TT, PSU - set some FR rushing records and shined in Orange Bowl. Personal issues led to leaving school with brief stop at camp for Ok Sooners, then IWCC and now practicing at Morningside.
Keenan Davis - 4star WR lots of offers Neb, OK, ASU, IL, CO - played as True Fr and went on to start at least 24 games. FA for Miami NFL today.
Drew Clark - 2star OG with ISU offer- saw very little action in 4 yrs, then decided this summer to retire from FB and focus on Engineering degree
Jordan Cotton - 3star WR offers from Wisc, ISU, KU - listed on 2 deeps . 1st team All B1G kick returner. started 1 game at WR.
Brad Rogers - 2star FB - saw action as RS Fr. Started 1 game as So, and 7 as JR but limited due to health (heart) problems and forced to retire last fall.

Wow. That was a turd of a class just as predicted by Scout as it was ranked #75, last in B1G. Far and away Ferentz's lowest rated class.

Over last 13 seasons, Iowa has signed on average the 40th rated class. Same as Wisc and IL. MSU 43. Neb 28.

8 guys from 2009 class that have actually contributed, but 2 of them gone before SR year (Wegher and Rogers).
12 of 19 players did not make it to SR (3 or 4 for injuries).
2 exhausted their eligibility in 4 yrs and are in NFL today (Hyde drafted, Davis FA)
2 listed as starters on 2-deep roster coming into Fall Camp (Van Sloten, Boffeli) 3 if you count Cotton as KR

Not what you hope for. Actually, that couldn't have gone any worse...

Class of 2010:

Anthony Hitchens - 2star RB offers IU, KU - No RS. 2 yr starter.
Tanner Miller - 2star S - 3 yr starter
Kevonte Martin-Manley - 2star WR w/MAC offers - won Pitt game as FR. 2nd yr Starter
CJ Fiedorowicz - 4star TE w/AZ, ND, OSU, Wisc offers- 17 starts so far.
Carl Davis - 3star DT w/IL, KU, MSU, Wisc - lots of hype coming into Fall. Listed as starter

Marcus Coker - 2star RB lots of offers MSU, Mich, Stan - great FR yr, suspended, transfered to Stoneybrook.
Christian Kerksey - 2 star OLB - Started 25 games so far. Played as true FR.
Don Shumpert - 2star S offers from IL, MN - playing WR on 2deeps. Played a little as FR. Hasn't recorded much for stats.
Andrew Donnal - 4 star OT Mich, BC, MSU, VA - started last yr before injury.
Brandon Sherrff - 3star OT Neb, MO, KSU, ISU - started 3 gm as RS FR and 7 last yr before injury.
Mike Hardy - 3star DE Neb, Wisc, PU, ISU - has played. Listed as co-started at DE
Austin Vier - 2star TE - had to quit with back injury
Louis Trinca-Pasat - 3star DE - IL, CO, MAC - started all 12 games last yr
Anthony Ferguson JR - 3star DE w/PSU offer - quit FB and was pursuing his degree at Iowa yet last yr.
Jim Poggi - 3star MLB Aub, OSU, PSU, TN, VA - retired with persistent injuries
Austin Gray - 3star MLB MSU, Pitt, PU, Wisc, IL -went thru fall camp '10 but chose not to enroll in school.
James Morris - 3star LB - 29 career starts.

Ok, this class has done far better. Came in ranked as #45th best.

14 of 21 have been MAJOR contributors.
11 of them STARTED multiple games.
12 listed as starters on 2-deeps now.
8 left the team, but 2 for injuries, 2 never made it to school, 1 decided to focus solely on school.

I may review the 2008 class later as I know there were a bunch of guys who never made it to graduation (or campus for that matter). This type of attrition, especially along DL and skill positions contributed greatly to our fall from Orange Bowl grace.

So, I guess the good news is, we have lots of seasoned, upper classmen playing this fall. 17 listed on two deeps, 14 as starters if I counted correctly...

It kind of shocks me about how truly bad the '09 recruiting class really was. Considering the great ending to the '08 season and it appears that most of the '09 recruiting class committed at the end of the '08 regular season and many after the bowl game on Jan. 1 of 2009. You would have thought they would have been a better class with how well Iowa rebounded and the emergence of a better QB in Stanzi and with the impressive year Shonn Greene had. Given the '10 class was better, still many kids must have been thinking that Iowa was going to stay like the '06-'07 teams and less like the '08 team. Hopefully with the '10-'13 classes being a better than '09 hopefully they will pay off in the next year or so.

This is the kind of stuff I come here for. Thxs for posting. '09 was a stinker for recruiting...for many reasons. I think we start to creep out of the valley this year.

Also note, however, that 5 of the 8 BIG teams on our schedule this year have an equal (1) or larger number (4) of returning starters in their lineups than the Hawks. The 3 BIG schools on our schedule that have fewer starters returning than the Hawks are OSU, MI, and NE.........and it probably doesn't matter much with the last 3.

A lot of ways to look at it but we always have hope at this point in the season.

Outside of Wegher and KD essentially none of those stiffs were wanted by any school worth noting. Excellent Post! I don't get as flustered with the program when I see us going after guys that other schools that I consider "in our league" are going after. The Tanner Miller's and Anthony Schivaone's of the world are the ones that are as aggravating as sand in the 'nether regions. Once in awhile you get a Bob Sanders, but you cannot base your entire recruiting philosophy on that.

Absolutely agree! Iowa has to develop a few players that nobody else wanted, but the vast majority of the 2009 class consists of that type of player. There was a reason nobody wanted them......they weren't any good!

The question is how many of these players would be multiple year starters if the Hawks didn't have two years of some of the worst Hawkeye football in recent history.
Reminds me of 2005-2007. Some guys played a bunch of years just because there was no one else to play.

Ave Scout Ratings over past 4 Classes:

IA 42
WI 44
NE 27
PSU 35
MSU 36
PU 59
MN 70
NW 53
IU 55
OSU 8
MICH 12

Interesting that neither Wisky or MSU have cashed in on historic runs over the past 5 yrs.

Class of 2011 was initially rated 22nd best as of last yr, but somewhere along the way there was some shuffling and now is #25.

Austin Blythe - 3star OT - KSU, Stanford, Wisc, ISU - Listed #1 C

Marcus Grant - 3star WR - UCONN, Syracuse - left team Dec of FR yr

This has been a very productive class already. Very few misses or transfers or knuckleheads (knock on wood).

2 never made it to IC (Coe, Vincent)
1 quit FB for track
16 listed on 2 deeps
7 listed as Starter or Slash

I think This years senior class is better than last years which gives me hope. CJ Fed, Morris, Cotton, Kirksey, Hitchens, Lowery, Miller, Van Sloten, Alvis, Bofelli. Plus other guys that might contribute Shumpert and MacMillan

Obviously the effect of the '06/'07 seasons was felt in these classes. It would've been awfully hard to get kids to come after those poo poo seasons.

As for Tanner, I don't think he's as bad as you obviously do. I think some of his shortcomings (as well as many of the DB's) last year came from a change in the defensive philosophy we went with (which was pretty much a major switch from what the secondary had done the previous years).

There's no doubt DB coaching was an issue last year, and that's why Darrell Wilson is now coaching at Rutgers. Also remember, before coming to Iowa Wilson was let go by Alvarez at Wisconsin.

As for Tanner Miller, like many players we've seen the last two years, he's simply not a B1G caliber player. Which is why UNI was his only other offer coming out of high school.

Another frustrating thing is that Tanner Miller's offer could have gone to David Parry that is a starting DL for #4 Ranked Stanford. He finally broke into the starting lineup about 3/4 quarters into last season as a red-shirt sophomore. He is now tearing up camp for Stanford's highly ranked defense.

David Parry Stats, News, Videos, Pictures, Bio - Stanford Cardinal - ESPN

Missing in the 2009 is Dominic Alvis. Was a gray-shirt until May 2009 where he was put on full scholarship.

Miller had 4 scholarship offers not just Iowa and UNI.

I'm sure Miller is a good person, good teammate, good student, and works his tail off. However, as a football player he struggles making open field tackles, and if you're going to play safety in the B1G that cannot be a weakness.
