Chuck Long and 5 bowl games

I'm certain many know this but I've not been able to find the complete answer. How did Chuck Long play in 5 bowl games, eligibility wise? Were rules different in the mid-80s?

He played a couple of plays at the end of the game in Iowa's 28-0 loss to Washington in the 1982 Rose Bowl.

I'm not sure exactly how the NCAA rules have changed, but he played little enough that season for it to count as a redshirt year.

red shirting was new and the rule was you could take x amount of snaps. rule was changed soon after.

I like the old rule, great way to get a little in game experiene with 4 years of eligiblity left!
