CHOKEYES

Problem is that those "huge strides" are only getting us back to where we were already at 15 years ago. It's like taking a pounding in your 401k for a few years and then kicking butt for the next couple and then looking at your statement and realizing you're still behind from where you were at before the market tanked. It feels good to know you're making headway, but frustrating to know you're not really any further along.

I love that analogy. It does feel like that w ith Iowa at times. The key is to get them in a half court game. Frankly we are not that good in the half court. Most teams aren't unless they have at least 1 dominant player, which we really don't. 1 0n1 guys can make a poor half court offense look good. That is really our weakness and won't change. We need to amplify our strengths and minimize the weaknesses. That really is the job of the coach.

I'll absolutely die of shock if Iowa ever has their last shot at the end of regulation actually GO IN. I paused the game with 18 seconds left when Iowa had the ball and a chance to win, and looked at my wife and said "Iowa will not be able to score, the game will go to OT and they will lose." It doesn't take a crystal ball to figure it out, because it's the same thing that always happens.

It's unbelievable. As for how many times we've been beaten at the buzzer... The list goes on and on.

Exactly. We've seen this ****** for 30+ yrs. Even Lute's teams had tons of crushing last minute defeats. It seems the bigger the game, the less likely our last second shot goes in, and the more likely theirs goes in. Unreal.

It's almost like in a season of 30 games or so there is strong opportunity for a few losses in the last minute (Yes, I know I was a crazy person last night yelling about curses and stuff but that's kind of what I do)

LOL. Saw on TOS we are like 0-for our last 26 or 0-for-32 on last possession attempts to win the game. Assuming you have a 50% chance to convert on any given possession, the odds of going 0-for-26 are 1 in 6.7 million! the odds of 0-for-32 are 1 in 4.2 billion! WE ARE THE CHOKEYES. Case closed.

Same ole same ole. For 30 years+ been watching the same thing. Every close game, we will lose. However we can do it...missed FTs, missed layups, turnovers, whatever. When up by 40, we can't miss a FT or 3-pointer. However, in a tight game, we can't buy a basket. Being a Hawk fan is painful. We have the most stacked team in 30 years, playing a completely undermanned Spartan team, and lost a game by 2 points in which we don't hit a shot in 15 minutes of game play. Unreal. just Unreal. Only the Hawks.

We've won a lot of close games in the last 30 years.

I've also been watching the Hawkeyes for over 30 years...not the same Hawkeyes you have been watching. Off the top of my head...Wade Lookingbill, James Moses and Rodell Davis all hit game winners late.

Edit - Luke Recker in the BTT for some that haven't been watching for 30 plus years...

Ya, Recker did this twice in the BTT (don't care who the coach was still exciting). Nothing since then I don't think....lots of Marble bricks.

One of the best is 1969-70 Vindnovic ,Johnson, Brown and Calabria. Why? They shot as a team for the entire season 80% from the free throw line. Wish we could do that today.

Jeff Horner did it twice, I know that. Per Brendan Stiles, Cy Tate did it v KSU in 2008, but I forgive us all for not remembering it.

"Undermanned"? MSU may not use their bench like Iowa does but that is because they havent had to as of late. When they did, I would hardly use "undermanned" Costello was a 83rd and Kaminsky was a 113th in the country coming out of high school. That puts both of them right in the area of Woodbury and MG.

If anything, it dropped them down to Iowa level. W/O injuries, MSU would have toasted us.

Still my all-time favorite Iowa team. Think they could have averaged 115 pts per game if the 3 pt shot had existed back then. Still haven't gotten over Jacksonville (Artis Gilmore) knocking the Hawks out of the NCAA tourney. Was listening to this game on the radio with my Dad and just broke down crying when we lost on a last second shot. Still one of the most exciting games I can remember........especially with Jim Zabel doing the broadcast.

Really?

Yeah, I'd buy it, but the problem is sports outcomes aren't binary 50/50 chances. And last possessions are notoriously difficult to score on (unless you are playing against Iowa) because you'll see the toughest defense of the day and the refs will swallow the whistle. Yeah, Iowa chokes. A lot. They always have and they always will. If you don't like it, go be clown fan.

Because they never choke?
