Charlie Moore now #1 in Illinois

Oh man this would be huge. This team needs a legit top tier true pg in the next class. Would also love to rub in my buddy's face. He's an Illini alum/apologist.

ESPN has Charlie Moore #2 in Illinois

They also have him #89 nationally as a 4* grade 80 player. That's basically even with Xavier Simpson at #87 nationally with the same rating as Moore.

I'm really hoping that we get a commitment from Moore, after his Iowa visit on June 20, to keep the ball rolling this summer for 2016 recruiting.

It would be great to have a guy with his quickness, athleticism, and passing ability to go along with the type of length Fran usually targets. He could really run Iowa's offense at the pace Fran seems to prefer. I think it will be tough to get him out from Illinois since clearly he's from there, but I feel like Fran's system is a better fit for him and Iowa could really use a PG like him.

Even with Connor coming in he isn't the same type of PG. Connor is a bigger kid who could probably move over to SG if Moore were to come into the mix. Would be great to have some legit depth if nothing else.

I'm sure Connor is a good player, but by the time he gets to Iowa he could be six ft. eight. I wouldn't bet against him outgrowing the point guard position. His point guard skills will be beneficial to him no matter what position he ends up at. He might be a point guard too.

Man I'd be surprised if he ends up 6'8 but I guess who knows. He's going to be a junior in high school right? And he's already listed at 6'4. I suppose 6'8 is still possible. Hard to tell at that age. He's probably not done growing. You're right about that. If he grows much more he's probably better off moving to a SG or SF position. I doubt he has the kind of athleticism needed to be a 6'5 or taller PG. That's pretty rare.

Wow if a 5'11 170ish pg is the #1 or 2 player in Illinois then he must be pretty darn good. Perfect timing for us having a need. Looks like he can shoot deep too. So long as no KYs of the world come sweeping through I like our chances. Stay home in Illinois and play for that program that's struggling or play in Frans exciting system and run the show for a ready to go tourny team... Not too tough of a decision to me.

Illinois' involvement has been fairly recent, while Iowa has been recruiting Moore for a while now. I agree that Moore and Connor would definitely be compatible in a rotation where Connor could play a lot of SG minutes.

To each his own, I guess!

I like that we're getting an unofficial after he unofficially visited Illanoy. I like this kids game. Boy, Fran sure as hell is bring in a lot of basketball athletes. If we could land this kid, that'd be what we need. The only other person on this team that would play pg minutes besides this kid (in 16 or 17) would be Williams, in my opinion.

Im not sure athleticism has any particular relation to height needed to play point.

Its just a skill set in generall IMO.

Its harder to protect the ball the taller you are though so the longer your arms are to keep your dribble low the better.

Moore and Dylan Painter are visiting this month. I think Santos is either visiting this month or the start of the next month. All three with Pemsl would be a pretty good class. Painter is listed at 6 ft. 10 and I read that Santos was 6 ft. 8. Pemsl, Painter, and Santos are pretty good sized for three guys that haven't started their senior year of high school yet. All four of the guys are athletic and skilled.

Meanwhile Harrison Barnes was a major contributor on an NBA championship team and a few years ago you were the guy claiming he wouldn't be a very good NBA player and Royce White would have a better career.

I'm not sure you're real familiar with basketball and talent. There are certainly some taller point guards and I don't have a problem with that. All I was saying was that there is a much higher chance that a young man who keeps growing above the 6'5 level is probably not going to be a PG. It's rare someone that tall has the quickness and athleticism usually displayed by a PG. If Connor keeps growing I don't see him being a PG. It's common sense really. That's not a knock on him at all. It's simply not common for the PG position to have players who are that tall. They would be playing out of position. There are some rare examples like Magic, Shaun Livingston, and Michael Carter-Williams but Connor McCaffery isn't even close to that level of athleticism.

The average NBA PG is 6'2. It was hard for me to find a college average but the typical range is 6'1 to 6'3.

If he keeps growing the odds of him being the next Magic Johnson are pretty slim. If he does grow three or four more inches, the point guard skills he is developing should serve him well wherever he ends up. I think I read that he was six ft. five now, but you can read all kind of things. I saw a recent interview of him, and he is filling out. He isn't going to be a slim guy like Jake Kelly was.

Totally agree with the bolded part of your post. PG experience translates well to any position. Sort of like Marvin McNutt being moved to WR. He said himself that his experience as a QB helped because he knew what reads the QB was probably making. In basketball the PG is the usually the coach on the court. That kind of experience helps any player.

Plus it never hurts to have multiple players capable of running the point. If Charlie Moore chooses to come to Iowa though I think it's pretty obvious he'd be the PG and Connor would more than likely move to SG. Can't help but get excited when thinking about a possible nucleus of Moore, Connor Mac, Joe Wieskamp, Patrick Mac, and Pemsl.
