Changes in our recruiting (recruiting success)

Anyone else remember in Ferentz first few years and the later Fry years when it was considered a big deal for us to get a three star recruit, or a recruit with other Big Ten offers? I still remember all the excitement when we got Matt Roth, who was a three star DE.

I was just thinking about it considering all the early commits we've had between this year and last years classes, and all the quality offers they have.

Jon and other long time posters probably can relate to what I'm talking about.

Cherish these years.

Matt Roth was a 4 star Linebacker out of HS. He is a 3 star DE in his current star-rating on his scout profile.

The success on the field is paying off, and some of our early targets are committing early instead of letting the process play out. I don't think we have changed tactics or recruiting the players we think fit, its just the kids we are getting are staying on campus for 4 years.

What I like is after some rough years, that Iowa fans recognize that we can both get the 4-5 star athletes and also those that may not even be rated, and be excited about it. Wasn't it last year (sorta like this last year) where we got a few higher rated players and got some 2 stars, but they fit into what we were looking for. I believe we were rated like 8-10 in the Big 10 for our recruiting class and most of us (myself included) really liked the class we recruited because it fit who we wanted/needed.

The coaching staff really learned from a few yrs ago & have done a remarkable job of recruiting top notch defensive backs, a position that I think may be the toughest to recruit. The DB was an achilles heal for Iowa a few yrs ago trying to cover the spread O's that pass, but, Iowa has done a good job of recruiting depth at DB as well as linebackers that can cover in those situations.

Remember though anybody who signs with Iowa instantly goes down a star but if they sign with OSU or Mich they go up a star.

Rant aside I think we just learned to combine need/character/talent into great recruiting. Remember the devil class which damn near ended the Ferentz era? That was pretty highly rated as well but the guys didnt fit with our team.

Recruits can see we have
-great fanbase
-great facilities
-great coaching
-always in the Big Ten Hunt and sniffing the NC from year to year
-Lots of Iowa Players getting drafted
-Tons of TV coverage

And at certain positions like OL, TE, and LB there are few colleges in the past years that have developed talent like we have at that position.
