Chance to be a good three-point shooting team next year

I would gladly take bets on Woodbury not starting.

Gambling isn't my thing, but Woodbury started every game last year (except senior day) IIRC. Not sure why he won't start next year now that Gabe & White are gone. So I think he starts.

The incoming class may be good, but I doubt they are going to supplant returning starters, much less from day 1. Just my opinion, but unless we have the Fab 5 coming in (which we do not), at least most of those freshmen will be coming off the bench. Will they play? Absolutely. Start? Probably not.

Just curious, what makes you think Woody will be a sub? Hasn't he started every game since he's been here? And I'm pretty sure we don't have any other big men that would start before him.

It was only a hypothetical lineup of shooters. The 'could' should have given that away. It was just a lineup to throw out on paper...not even a starting lineup. Notice MG as the 6th man. That would not happen. Especially with Fran. He is as stubborn as KF about his starters...only smart enough to sit them on the bench when he needs to.

Now the lineup I mentioned - AC, Jok, Fleming, Uthoff, and Jones is a very real possibility. On paper I love it. We will have to see how those two newbs settle in. But if they live up to expectations, then i think we could see this group on the floor at times. They would have other teams scrambling.

Iowa should have a great collection of players who can hit the three next year. Jarrod Uthoff, Peter Jok, Brady Ellingson, Andrew Fleming. Anthony Clemmons actually led the team in % this year and Mike Gesell is capable but that should not be his focus. Bring in newly signed Dale Jones, who made 99 of 218 3-pointers last year at 6-8/220 and you are going to be able to stretch the floor, or have a chance to.

This year’s team made .333 from three on 576 attempts. Here are the best three-point shooting years in Iowa history

.415% 1987-1988 (453 attempts)
.406% 1990-1991 (330)
.401% 1997-1998 (543)
.396% 199601997 (585)
.377% 2001-2002 (573)
.376% 2004-2005 (588)
Nice post, Jon.

Jon, the key word in the thread title that jumps out at me is "CHANCE". Reminds me of a saying a leader once used when trying to motivated a group of young men in his church. "There is no hope, no fate, no chance, that can circumvent, hinder, or control, the firm resolve of a determined soul." Let's hope these guys are all determined souls. :) GO HAWKS!!!!! Is it tip off time yet???

No offense to Oglesby, but his graduation alone boosts our team 3 point percentage by about 4 points (literally). Those missed threes will now be shot by other guys who hit at a higher percentage. This should lead to an extra 5-10 points per game next year. If the defense remains steady, we should be a solid team.

I would gladly take bets on Woodbury not starting.

Anybody that would bet that Woodbury wouldn't start, barring injure, doesn't really know much about the Iowa coaching staff. Woodbury will be the best guy, but a few years ago Iowa started McCabe over Uthoff. The coaching staff isn't going to not start a hard working player that has a ton of experience. Its like some people thinking that Wisconsin will finish in the top four of the conference next year. Both bets seem like easy money.

Do you think being an above average 3 point shooting team will move Iowa into the next tier? Keep them from regressing this coming year? Be more fun to watch?

I like the idea of Iowa shooting lights out from deep, however I think it may be more important that many of the players will be better able to defend in various ways due to their athleticism.

To your point I think Iowa will be better from range, but I also think they will be better over all on offense. I think the ability of some of these young slashers to get to the rim will lead to a lot of open looks. Furthermore, if Jones or Uthoff is playing the 5 and can open up the lane like Kaminsky or even Niang has been able to do, look out.
