CBS Rankings

Eh not surprising. We lost 4 starters and will be playing several inexperienced players. We also lack a true point guard.

I still think with Fran's track record we should be considered at worst an NIT team. I expected to be in the 60's or so

Some times as fans we want to see more than what is really there. I expects a lot of bumping roads this season and if Joc becomes the only CONSISTENT offensive threat it could get ugly. I also see a great opportunity for young players evolve like a Pokemon and surprise us, Fran will earn his stripes this year.

That's probably more realistic. I am sure UNI fans are scratching their heads also.
Michigan State has lost two big guys to season ending knee injuries. They have only two true freshmen above six foot six on their roster. Of course, one of the guys was a five star and the other a four star in high school. It will be interesting to see if they finish above Iowa in the rankings.

Shilling is season ending?

That's my understanding. Hopefully, for his sake it isn't. Both Carter and Schilling had or are going to have surgery. The coach has said they will both miss a period of time that hasn't been determined. It doesn't sound very good for either of them.

I agree. Even though we have to compete against them and it helps our chances of winning, I still hate to see these young men get hurt.

Iowa only plays Michigan State once toward the second half of the conference season.

Being ranked anywhere above 50 is generous with this team. Fran is the only reason we get that high or higher. Dickey V's #35 is because of our head man. Especially if you consider our recruiting rankings, which so many do, when one has little experience returning. What else is there to judge off of?

I like Mr,. Vitale's rank. That is part Fran, part Homer, and part knowing what we might have for a team. I think Fran has the talent to put together a good one, NCAA bound, IF certain players step up.

Certain being a mix. Jok, Cook, Baer, CW(and/or JB) being sure things,, basically consistently doing what is needed on the offensive & defensive ends. Uhl, Wagner & Jones giving us some good Games here & there, BUT throughout the season and not just December & January. Then having a couple players come Developing to be pleasant surprises; either Moss, Pemsl, JB, Kreiner, Ellingson and/or Dailey.

If the first two groups give us what they can, and I think they will. Then NIT is for certain.,..with a possible bubble team. If the third group can chip in a player or two a game with a decent performance either defensively and/or offensively, then you can count us as in the NCAAs. Bank on that.

Fran is the man. It is a big test for him. Lots of teaching, Being patient, tempering the pressure, yet demanding will be needed & required, I have confidence.

On Iowa!

Meh, preseason rankings are pretty useless IMO. It's just water cooler talk for what teams everyone THINKS will be good (or not) in the upcoming season.

Still, Iowa was barely ranked at the end of last year and they lost a lot to graduation, so it's no surprise they aren't getting any love. But it doesn't matter - the Hawks can go out and do it on the court.

I agree with what someone else said - you get outside of the top 30 or so and you may as well just start pulling names out of a hat.
