Lol. So, he's projected 1st round, but Phil says he's not ready.
Well put. Do not sell King short. The NFL sold King and Hyde short on draft day. But that does not mean they were not great corners. If anything, Hyde and King proved to be under-rated by the NFL.
I believe Phil when he says JJ needs to work on his zone coverage, but the question is whether he'll develop that better in the NFL where he'll be targeted or in college where everyone will throw away from him.
Exactly! It really annoys me when coaches say dumb shit like this. Where is he going to get more coaching and work on zone coverage...at Iowa in between classes in his dorm room, or in the NFL where his entire life is focused on football?
Good for Jackson, he balled out this year. It would be different if he were a true JR, and wasn't graduating in May. We have some quality corners coming back next year.
Who? Hankins looks like he has potential, but outside of that we have Ragumba who is terrible, and Ojemudia who isn't any better. Unless someone emerges, our cb play next year doesn't look promising.
I can't say I saw him being 1st team all-american, but I knew damn well he was better than Mabin.Who saw Josh Jackson becoming a First Team All-American after not even being a starter last year? Rugamba was widely thought to be the top corner for Iowa this year and turned out to be the 3rd or 4th best corner this year. We return Ojemudia, an even rangier version than Jackson, Hankins who had a Michigan offer coming out of HS and gained experience, and Rugamba who was preseason all BIG coming into this year. Even with Jackson leaving, Iowa has reason to be more optimistic going into next season about their corners than they did this year.
This is taking a quote WAY out of context. Phil was asked Jackson's strengths and weaknesses and he replied that Jackson is much more accomplished in man coverage, but still struggles in some zone concepts. Not once did he say "he needs to come back to Iowa to work on his zone coverage understanding". I'll trust Phil's opinion of defensive back talents and their strengths and weaknesses considering he's put more guys in the league than every other coach on the staff combined...It really annoys me when coaches say dumb shit like this. They actually do minimal individual technique work in the NFL due to the heavy emphasis on game-plan/tactics. That is one of the reasons Hawks are so highly valued in the NFL, organizations know they come in technically sound from a system that required them to think on the field. They are plug-and-play ready.
Great height for a CB as well. listed at 6'1.If we’re talking coverage I agree and that’s probably most important as it relates to NFL but King is the best tackling corner I’ve ever seen. He never missed.
