WATERLOO, iowa --- Groundbreaking Cedar Falls High freshman Cassy Herkelman will be honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum today at 5:30 p.m.
Herkelman became the first female wrestler to qualify for the Iowa high school state tournament and the first to win a match when her first-round opponent defaulted.
Herkelman will be honored during the African-American Wrestling Experience event the museum is hosting that evening. Five prominent African-American wrestlers, including Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson, will be on hand for a panel discussion.
"Cassy qualifying for the Iowa high school state tournament is a historic first for wrestling," said Kyle Klingman, director of the Gable Museum. "Honoring her during a celebration of diversity makes sense."
Gable will be in attendance, and the event will be broadcast live at LiveSportsVideo 24 Hour Web Casting.
For more information, contact the museum at (319) 233-0745 or at info@wrestlingmuseum.org.
