Cash decomits

I wasn't too impressed when I read about him. I think Iowa's too far from home anyway geographicly land culturally. And sometimes a school finds another player...then let the other one (cash) decommit and save face.

From what tidbits I have caught online so far it sounds like this was in the making for a while and that it was mutual. Not that Iowa recruited over him or anything, more that he wasn't singing the commitment song as loudly as KF wanted him to, so there was a bit of a mutual break up. You gotta have a QB that is 100% committed so he can recruit and attract others to join. Jake Christensen, for all his shortcomings as an actual QB, was a great leader and recruiter in this regard.

Its early. There are still a lot of QBs available for that cycle. And as Gander noted, we have a deep QB room right now. Frankly, with the portal, high school kids have become less and less important. In Lester I trust.

With the most loaded QB room in Hawkeye history, this is no surprise. The surprise may be that it took this long.

Plus, we learned this year, there are lots of QBs with game experience that will be entering the portal every year. If our west coast offense is as advertised, we will have zero problem bringing good QBs in.

While I don't think many of us like the changes that have come about with the free wheeling transfer portal and wild wild west NIL situation, it does make it easier for schools like Iowa to fill holes when there are transfers or decommits. KF will always want to run a developmental program, and that is the more economic way of doing it (high school talent is much cheaper than good portal talent), but if Iowa has needs at a key position, it can take a cast off from a really big school or bribe a star from a smaller school to leave. Indeed, the new system may benefit the middle class of college most. The Blue Bloods have always filled their rosters with 4 and 5 stars. Now they are just paying a lot to do that. But, with the House settlement, there is some level of equity in what is being spent, so Iowa can buy talent it may not have been able to attract in the past.

I'm hearing Ball State....that leads me to believe that the quarterback room was crowded enough that he felt like he was not going to compete or was down on the depth chart enough he wasn't going to see time in the future.

Now, now, we don't need to be too negative to this young fella. This is a good sign that competition is improving and may be a bit stiffer, also the difficulty level of the offense is much more complex. Checkers too chess................. war games.

Ironicly, I was listening to a podcast a couple of summers ago where they talked about decommits. These were very informed people. They explained that a good percentage of decommits are really situation where the school moved on. Of course the school isn't going to humilate the player...So the player opens their recruitment / decommits.

Ironicly I was in La Jolla, CA when I was listening to it. The home town of one Iowa QB decommit.

My first thought when I read this was that maybe Iowa had moved on. NorthKC has some info that he may not have been all in. Maybe that contributed to a mutual decision to go separate ways.

I can't remember the timing of this kids recruitment. Was he recruited by Lester or is this kid a holdover recruit from the dark years?

With today's NIL and transfer portal, it's the new norm for athletes to move on. A commitment isn't what it used to be. However, there are just times that things don't work out or are not what they were believed to be. I cannot blame a young person who wants to seek the best opportunity for themselves. It's not much different than someone changing jobs for better benefits or more money. It's just the way it is.

On the other hand, it sucks for the program (sometimes) because they invest into a commitment, and to have them change their mind because it has been made easier to do so, sucks. But it's just the times we live in.

Sounds like he was getting more offers coming in and wanted to entertain those and probably do visits... That's always a contentious thing with Iowa where once you're committed then that should mean you shut down all that. So if that's how he wants to be then Iowa is more then cool with cutting him loose and continuing to look themselves.

Iowa didn't do so hot with the last Qb we got from CA so I'm good with it. Today's Qb cycle is damn near going to be a yr to yr thing.

I have to wonder if there is a heard mentality when it comes to recruiting. When a B1G school offers suddenly the player gets noticed. He gets on other programs' radar. Ya wonder if we're better off just waiting and then zoom in and scoop em up at that last minute when to too late for everyone to compete for the kid

KF has always been of the mentality that we are either dating or married. A commitment is a marriage, and seeing other people is not on the table. We have seen that play out a lot over the last 25 years. KF has loosened up some on that front, but I don't think this kid was worth it, so sounds like they cut him loose and will look for a QB that is 100% in matriculating to the U of I.

I did forget that And yet I hope he never sees the field again for Iowa... He wasn't all that good either and I'm saying that as nicely as I can.

Word out of spring ball was that he had improved a lot, had a good spring and could be considered a potential #2 going into the fall.
