Cartwright's absence in 1st half

Bryce goes out with 14:18 left in the first half, as he was ill.
Iowa led 7-6.

Bryce comes back in with 6:47 left in the first half.
Iowa scored just 9 points in almost 8 minutes during his absence and trailed 16-25.

It was the beginning of the end. Yes, I know there were other reasons for the beatdown in DSM, but this one stood out to me.

This explains why many of us are scared about Iowa struggling to take much of a step forward. Iowa really, really needs a back up PG. Stubbs, Marble, and Oglesby are not PG. It's too bad Iowa is going to bank on Bryce staying healthy all season. It would have been real nice to have Cully around this year. Going forward I would hope you would have better PG than Payne but at least he was a PG and the other back up options are not PG.

I did not think Bryce was penetrating that well yesterday and him being around early and the score being close was just a function of the game being early. I was impressed with Creightons perimeter versitility.

I would give McCarty a shot at pg as he is quick and a good ball handler. Although he is short, he may be/become a better backup option than what the Hawks are doing now. Its worth a try, imo.

I think BC's absence hurt our offense, but we still lacked solid defense, and most of all rebounding. We were weak inside. Need to get tougher.

Looks like the loss of Hubbard hurt more than we think eh?

Hubbard is at Morgan State. The kid hasn't played a single minute on an 0-3 team. What makes you think that the kid would have / could have helped us this year? I'm not big on bagging on the kid now that he's gone but he's gone for a reason. Fran took a chance on the kid and realized (before it was too late) that the kid didn't need to be at Iowa.

Cully Payne wouldn't have helped this team much either. He is sitting out this year for the national powerhouse Loyola Ramblers. Do you really think that a kid was that homesick that he would transfer from a Big10 team to a doormat in the Horizon league?

Cully is sitting out because he is a transfer and is not eligible to play this year. You make it sound like he is sitting out because he is not good. I don't think Cully is a front line Big 10 PG but the fact is if Cartwright needed a rest or gets injured/sick Cully could come in and play PG and you don't have to have bad or non PG playing PG.

Eric May, Matt Gatens, Deyn Marble, Stubbs, McCarty, Oglesby are not PG. So when Bryce goes out you need one of these guys to shift over to PG. Since all of them are worse PG not players necessarilly but worse PG options than Cully it stinks not having Cully around. Now my hope is Iowa gets another PG on top of Mike G next year who is a really good PG and Iowa will then have PG depth. I would not mind Iowa finding a JUCO PG, but I think they also need to find a JUCO wing player too. Iowa is very, very weak at the wing position.

Would b nice to get a juco PG, but what JUCO would come here knowing they are a back up this year and most likely a back-up again next year?
We do already have 2 PG's signed for next season, correct?

I think FM is trying to give Stubbs a chance, but personally I don't see that working out. Hope I'm wrong. Marble has to fill that role.

We have some mismatched parts that is for sure. We have a lot of guys who can't get their own shot and only one guy capable of doing the creating for them. Hindsight is 20/20, but as others have stated, a mid major caliber juco PG would really help us out this year.

Would you guys please go and listen to what Fran had to say about recruiting, recruiting timetable and getting the players that he wants rather than what he has (read between the lines).

I thought Stubbs looked scared out there yesterday, he wasn't doing anything. He didn't create anything, and also didn't do anything with the ball or the pass.

We have Clemmons and Gesell coming in next year but they will both be true freshman, so expect some growing pains.

We will do the best we can with the players we have. That is all there is to it. The lack of a backup PG remains the same as it did last year. The position will be covered nicely next year. Until then, perhaps we should support the team which is composed of Hawkeyes.....

:)

Cully is Gone....

I can read between the lines. Here are the players Fran likes.....

Cartwright- He was better than Payne & it was apparent from day one last year. I know fran sees himself getting better PG than Cartwright in the future though.

Basabe- He brought him over and probably really sees him as a great #3 option on a good team once he can get a good team.

White- His staff recruited White and they see him as a good all around player.

Olesani- His staff recruited him and they see him as a good role player who is athletic with some upside going forward.

Ogelsby- His staff recruited him and they see him as a great three point specialist who can come off the bench going forward I bet.

Gatens- They like him. Just a great "basketball" player. Too bad he will not play on any great Iowa teams and be a great 10-12 point a game guy so Iowa fans can truly appreciate what he brings to a good team. On a below average team he is the best player but gets ragged on because he really is not good enough to be the best player on an above average team.

I see the staff liking these current players and are just being nice and trying to work best with what they have will all the other players.

I did not think Cully was that great, but his depth would be nice this year. He obviously did not want to be a back up PG this year and his final two years as it was apparent Fran was going to go get a good PG to be the starter.
