Cartwright vs Cully

I know its early and there is a small sample size but I think its time for Cartwright to be the starting PG. Cully's decision making hasnt improved and he seems to make costly mistakes at very bad times. That charge late in the 2nd half was a huge play. It seems like Fran has been riding the hot hand anyways but I think we are very close to a starting lineup change.

Cartwright has the ability to get to the rim, finish and create shots for other guys. Hopefully he continues to get better

Not sure why he is taking 2.5 x as many shots as May, though. He needs to set people up first (May) and shoot last.

Today they were mainly layups and easy shots. Im fine with him taking more shots if they are easy buckets
 
From what I have seen, we still don't have a point guard. Or a presence in the paint either, for that matter. We are full of 2's and 3's with 2 more on the way. Until we have a 1 and a 5, long, tough road.

no...he took some horrible shots that contributed to LBSU runs. he needs to be setting up others...and if you cant make free throws at the end of a close game, you should probably give the ball up.

Thats a good point on the FT. Im not saying Cartwright is perfect but I think he has been much more impressive than Cully so far this season
 
I like Cully's spirit, but just not sure he is going to be athletic enough to ever really push the ball up the court, passing or running. He may have been a 1, but not convinced he can really be a difference maker.
 
cully is really trying to set up others while adjusting to a new offense.

cartwright is simply scoring.

neither is right or wrong, and we need both.
 
The new guys, or the ones that haven't been previously playing, are going to have a much easier time transitioning to the new scheme. Guys like Cully, Cole, and Gatens are really going to have to have a total mental transformation. You will probably see all three have significant times of struggle as they end up caught between both systems.

For Cully, this will probably result in bad decisions, for Gatens, it will probably result in not playing aggressively enough, and for Cole, just not knowing how to be in the right place at the right time.
 
If you remember, this is what I wrote a few weeks back and I still believe it to be true:
What I really like about the Payne/Cartwright combo is how they have two completely different types of games. Payne is going to take care of the ball, find the open guy and give him a chance to score. He'll take shots when they are there, but he will play within himself. Cartwright on the other hand is a super quick, get to the rim, slashing type of guard. One that will likely be more of a risk/reward type of PG. He'll take more chances on both sides of the ball.

You need excellent guard play to win in the college game. It is a must. You can win without dominant bigs, but you cannot win without solid guards.

Payne is a nice back up PG and should get minutes, but BC should be getting the starting minutes just on quickness on defense alone.
 
I think this is an interesting position to watch develop this year. Fran actually might have to have one of his assistant's who has supposed ties to finda juco pg for next year.

I don't know if Cully really has the ability to be the "main" pg for Fran. I am curious weather Cartwright is going to be good enough to be the "main" pg for Fran. I don't think Cully has the athleticism to be the lead guard. I really think Cully has a nice shot and would not be opposed to see him get more chances to shoot the ball rather than try to facilitate the offense.

Iowa needs someone who can consistently break guys down off the bounce. That is not something Gatens, May, McCabe, Cully, or Marble seem to excel at. I have not seen quite enough of Cartwright against good competition to draw any conclusions about him.
