Cartwright has signed

I'm a Hopmasters sub and while much of the content isn't of interest (I can only stand a certain amount of Summer AAU drivel), there is more than enough to make it worthwhile for an Iowa fan.

So I was at the North Central I-Club banquet last night, and Ryan Bowen was there. He was talking about incoming recruits, and he mentioned they signed Cartwright on Tuesday, then followed that up by saying something to the effect of "he's going to come in & will be a great backup for Cully" then immediately caught himself and changed it to "competing along with all the other incoming FR, and we think very highly of him." Whether that was his own personal slip, or a coaching staff's thinking of a player's perceived role, I don't know, but I found it interesting.

We got the news release yesterday, if anyone wants to read it:

BRYCE CARTWRIGHT SIGNS TENDER WITH HAWKEYES

IOWA CITY, IA -- University of Iowa Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery announced today that Bryce Cartwright has signed a tender to attend the University of Iowa. Cartwright is the second recruit for McCaffery at Iowa.

“We are excited to have Bryce become part of our Hawkeye family,” said McCaffery. “He will be an excellent backcourt player for us who will definitely make an impact in our up-tempo style of play.”

Cartwright is a 6-1, 180-pound guard from Compton, CA. Cartwright prepped at Dominguez High School, played his freshman year of collegiate basketball at Fresno State and sophomore campaign at Paris Junior College in Texas.

As a freshman at Fresno State, Cartwright competed in all 34 contests, starting 20. He averaged 4.9 points, 3.2 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 0.8 steals per contest. Cartwright led the team in free-throw percentage, making 34-of-46 attempts (.739). He ranked second on the team in assists, and boasted the sixth-best assist/turnover ratio (1.6) and ninth-best assist average in the conference. Cartwright netted double figures six times, including a career-high 20 points in a thrilling 90-87 overtime triumph at Cal Poly. He averaged 5.4 points and 2.9 assists against league competition.

This past season at Paris JC, Cartwright averaged nine points and 3.5 assists in helping lead his team to a 27-6 overall record while winning the Region XIV North Zone title with a 17-3 mark. Cartwright averaged 15.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds in three contests en route to a runner-up finish at the Region XIV Tournament.

Cartwright led his high school team to a 32-3 record, averaging 13 points and seven rebounds his senior season in 2008. He was tabbed first team CIF Southern Section and San Gabriel Valley League. Cartwright was also recognized to MaxPreps National Division All Tournament team. He was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and earned the CIF Sportsmanship Award his senior campaign.
